Need advice on 8 Ga. DC wiring through roof spars

Postby kookenotes » Sun Oct 06, 2013 9:35 am

I'm in the final stages of my build and would like the benefit of the forum's experience to review my plan and raise any warning flags.

My battery and Progressive Dynamics charger/converter will be in my tongue box and fed by a Marine on-board charger inlet. I plan to run my 8 Ga. feed lines through a Perko Marine deck connection at the nose of my tear, through the roof spars to a Progressive dynamics distribution/fuse box in the galley raceway. I am using stranded wire and do not plan to use any conduit. There will only be 12 volt wire in the roof and I will run about 6 inches from the roof edge to be sure not to nail into it. Is there anything about this set up that I have overlooked?

Be a lot simpler to run them through a conduit UNDER trailer.... Plastic conduit is probably solid enough, and if there was ever a problem it would be easier to fix.... But running through roof is probably not a problem other than as you say putting a nail or screw through them and threading it through all the spars at time of construction.... Don't know if it meets CODE though as some people seem to be really serious about....

Also wire run under trailer in conduit would make wire run about 1/2 as long as up-over-down route....

I will second Dale. I have a bunch of wires under CR and I have had to make changes as I added goodies, easy to get to.

I too have conduit running underneath the teardrop from the back to the front and to the tongue box.

I ran mine inside the cabin along the floor next to the side walls in wiremold conduit. Easy access if I ever need to work on it. Ran my DC primary on one side and my rear trailer lights on the other side. Mattress covers everything.
