What is your biggest regret on your build

Postby jonesnforcampin » Sun Aug 18, 2013 11:07 pm

Finished putting my trailer together with the sub deck and now we are going to draw up the exact plans with dimensions and all. (We were waiting to do the exact design to find out how high off the ground the deck of the trailer would be)

So now I am wanting to see what some of your biggest regrets or things you would do differently on your build. I figure if I can get these things out of the way on paper I will be much happier with my finished product.

Not really a regret, but a blooper that didn't go according to plan. I planned to insulate my roof and end walls with 1.5" of rigid foam board. My spars were nominal 1X2. My local big box only had 1/2" foam board so I bought enough to use three layers to fill the gap. Turned out that the 1/2" foam board was actually 9/16" so three layers were 3/16 too much. I finally gave up and used only two layers of the 9/16 foam board and left an air gap in the spaces. It's probably a trivial issue since you can't see it and insulation is not that critical to the way I use my camper (mostly fair weather). It's just that I know that it's there and that it is not what I had planned.

Another minor issue was my upgrading of tires from the 12" Chinese tires that came with my NT trailer to 13" passenger car tires. After our first trip with the 12" tires, I knew that I had to change them out as they were just too hard and bouncy, even after dropping the air pressure. Upgrading the tires from the start would have been a lot easier. You will find a lot of discussion on the Forum on this issue so research it well before making a decision.

Yeah, hoping I am ok with the 12" tires because I bought a spare before I heard about upsizing. How much did it raise your camper when you upsized? I am wanting to go no taller than my TV and the wife is really concerned about
interior height.

I made ugly square doors for my TD, they leaked :(
I ended up making a round topped door like I wanted, but still had it closing against the outside of the TD, this was still clunky.
I finally set them into the sidewalls the way they should be for sealing, aerodynamics, and looks. with a inner frame to seat against and a nice gutterover them I'm finally happy with how they look, the TD looks much better, and it should never be able to leak.
It only took me four tries.
I also dscovered RV sliding windows are heavy, expensive even used, and when open, only about half the window is really open.
On door try #4 I made a Wiley window instead. I wish I had the first time. the screen is cheap and glued in with RTV, the window "glass" is a plexiglass in the size my local HD stocks in .221 thick 18x24". with the glass tipped in I have the same opening as the RV window, and no chance for rain to come in, when the TD got too hot camping this past weekend I took the glass out and had the whole window open.

I wish I had made two doors! One door makes it a little tough for making the bed.

Also, I like the "Camp-Inn" style galley/hatch. Wish I had seen one before I made mine.....

The floor. You are only laying on it with a mattress, it doesn't need to be heavy. If only I could do it over.

If I could do it all over again? I over built, 1/4" outer, with 1X3" birch framimg(layed flat of course to aid in radiusing), and 1/4" int sidewalls. Too heavy! The roof I got a little smarter, 5mm outer, 1/8 inner with 1x2 spars. Also the doors, planned and cutout the holes for two. Filled in the road side and have 20x30" rv window in place. Making my own door and regretting every minute of it. Shopping for plug and play right now. I think I would go with a more box type design and use aluminum for the framing and skins. Wood for cabinets and interior only.

Building a microwave oven in the galley. I only have regrets because I don't use it that much, sometimes I forget it is there.

The Axle is too far back and I do not even want to know what the tongue weight is! When Eye 4 Design added the front platform they did not compensate by moving the axle forward. During the rebuild I asked about doing this and due to the frame design (cross-members) it could not be done. It Tows very smoothly and I will add Subaru rally springs next spring.

Sounds like a standy door width to me.

I'm a big guy and my cabin is a little taller than the std 48 inch (49-1/2 inside at the peak). My doors are 32-1/2w x 40-3/4h at the wall frame opening (deducting for the inner seal flange the clear opening is a bit smaller).

I can sit in the doorway and do the "knee lift and roll" back into my laying down position without having to touch my knees to my nose (which I can't do anyway), nor clobbering my legs or feet into the door jamb.

I like wide doors.

My build is far from complete, or even campable, so I will hold off on listing any serious regrets (I don't have any yet), but I do wish that I could achieve the level of quality and features that I am after with a lot less time and money expended. I do not regret the path that I am taking, but it is a major commitment; you could even call it a lifestyle change.

I didn't build mine but in hindsight I would have gone with two doors.
