Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

estimating weights

Postby dpjeansonne » Sun Oct 06, 2013 3:15 pm

I am thinking of a conversion using a 6x12 size trailer. To decide on single or double axles, how do you estimate a loaded out conversion? Any rule-of thumb that one could use?

Welcome to the forum

6 x 12 trailers come from HF with 800 lbs axel up nice cargo trailers with standard axel 3,500 & even 5,200 lbs single
Cargo weight 500 to 2,500 Lbs

Tandem axel are from 7,000 to 9,990 Lbs weight class
cargo weight 5,000 to 8,000 Lbs

Then you need to know what your tow vehicle can tow ?
What do you need the 6 x 12 to do for you ?
Mostly it always comes down to a matter of money

From there we can help you with your plan
Here is what crazy over the top gets you

For me it's as simple as the question. Do you plan on using the trailer for anything other than camping? If the answer is yes, IE you also plan on throwing an ATV or Dirt bikes/Motorcycles along with you or you plan on also using it as a cargo trailer/camper dual purpose, than go with tandem axles. If it is camping only, than go single. FYI, 12ft trailers seem to be the shortest length with the tandem axle option for most manufacturers.

My ATV is less than 500 lbs so with a single axle capacity of 3500 lbs and a 1300 lbs trailer still leaves me with 700 lbs of gear and trailer stuff. This seems like adequate capacity unless I am missing something.

I would make sure to get trailer brakes with the single axle if you are planning to max out the weight limit ( which at some point you most likely will ) , makes for a big difference in comfort level :)
