How do I put all of this together?

Postby tscarbroughdc » Wed Oct 09, 2013 12:52 pm

I have ran all my DC wires on my camper to the back ceiling. I have grouped the white and black wires together.

Now I am assuming that I need to make a hole in the ceiling and run the wires down the galley and wire them to the battery.

But I'm really confused as to how to run them from the ceiling down to the battery, then how to tie them all together and attach to the battery.

What do I do next?

I appreciate all of the help!

I would label what each wire goes to and install a fuse block. Or get a terminal buss bar and run inline fuses on each wire. Which ever way you go, make sure you will be able to access the fuses when you are done. Then, run a bigger wire, depending on your total amp draw 10-6 awg, from your battery to the block, along with a big fuse a few inches from your battery. You only have to install fuses on the positive sides so the negatives can all go to a buss bar or some type of lug.

One of your roof supports appears to have the wires under it?

Yes! You are very observant!!! I accidentally use two different kinds of 1x2 and so I have a few spars that do not touch the inside ceiling but every spar will touch the roof when I put it on

Thanks for looking the photo over good! I want y'all to warn me if you see something I did bad wrong!

Does anyone have a picture of the fuse bus showing how wires run into it and what wires look like running to the battery to give me some idea?

Thanks

You can get something as simple as shown in the link below for a fuse/ground panel....

Image
Six fuse panel shown.

http://www.delcity.net/store/ATC-&-ATO- ... ad/p_11262

You have choice of panels with 6 or 8 or 10 or 12 fuse positions and there is double the number of ground positions if you need additional grounds.....

Looks as if you have 8 circuits run already... I would get the 12 position panel and you will have room for growth (oh yes, it will happen) ...

Panel also has two main threaded terminal for wires going to battery..... You may or may not put master fuse on line for battery, its your choice....

As other have mentioned be sure fuse/ground panel is accessible in event fuse blows...

Also there are some new cool ATC/ATO fuses the contain LED's so if one blows it lights up to tell you which one has "faulted"

This fuse panel is probably the simplest way and least expensive...

In this rather fuzzy pic you see a main fused main disconnect ( the black glob at the left) It acts as a circuit breaker and has manual shut off capabilities as well. the battery (foreground ) feeds it from the positive side. From there the hot side goes from fuse to fuse in the red curly wires at the top. The hot side is now divided into 4 circuits on mine that is front wall right and left side wall and galley area. The grounds all terminate at the buss bar on the right and thru a heavier wire back to the ground side of the battery. This is for 12 volt dc accessories and lighting only. I would recommend you leave the towing lighting as a seperate issue and rely on the tow vehicles fuse protection for the towing lights. I purchase the disconnect about 9 bucks and the 4 place fuse holder 2 bucks at the local auto parts store. The buss bar was in the electrical isle with the fuse boxes at the lumber store for less than $2.00.

Do I just drill a hole in the ceiling and let the wires run out of the ceiling to the fuse box? Is there a special plate or covering to put on the ceiling that the wires come through?

I'm planning on wiring my camper tomorrow.

Then I'll have to put the outside Luan on and the back hatch and I should be about ready to use it!

There is no requirement or specification, its up to you to have solution that meets you build requirements and the you can be happy with.... You can run it down the wall exposed or inside wall or make a covered channel or use a molding to hide it....

Label and neaten up. Mine came from the builder with a rats nest of wiring, hidden BUT. It is a pain when ever I have to work on wiring around the Progressive Dynamics power center.

Ok I have neatened it up.

Would someone show me a picture of the kind of fuse that is supposed to be put in between the battery and the fuse box?

I'm trying to figure that out now.

And it would be nice if there were some way to totally cut the power without having to unhook the cables from the battery every time.

Oh and one more thing!

Can anyone tell what I did wrong in the wiring from my picture?!?! Haha

I'm too lazy to change it though unless one of y'all say that my trailer will catch fire if I don't fix it!
