Newbie from the PacNW

Postby Dirtyfootcamper » Wed Oct 16, 2013 5:58 pm

I've actually been a member of the forum for a while, getting information from other peoples builds and mods. I have spent years thinking of how I want to build my first Teardrop and last winter I bought a Pinecone Trailer off the lot because I got it for a steal of a deal. I still have plans to build a custom TD but wont be doing that for a while because of my newly purchased Trailer. I have done quite a few things to it to fit my needs and still have many more ideas thanks to all the wonderful people on this forum. Hope to be on here more often during these winter months to gather more ideas and knowledge. Thanks to all who are a contributing part of this.

Bryce

Welcome Bryce!
Hope you hook up with Greg "Pinecone" soon as he is excited about his newly acquired Pinecone teardrop also.
There is a great group of teardroppers here in the Pacific Northwest.
Can't wait until we meet you down the road someday.
Lots of Gatherings to choose from in 2014.

Glad to have ya Bryce.
Don't put off building that TD just the way you want. At least you don't have the pressure to finish it quickly but you can take your time and do it right. There is always a market for a good used trailer. The best part of the build is the enjoyment of doing something yourself and seeing it develop into something beautiful and useful, something you can enjoy using for years!

Bryce! Hey Partner where do you live in Washington? I am in Longview and purchased a 2012 Pinecone just a few months ago (in late June). I've had it out 12 times since! Hope to see you at some TOW events and perhaps even the Dam Gathering next May. I hope I can make it...it's still too far away to commit at the moment.

All the people I've met since owning a TD are just fantastic. Welcome to the family. When towing it around our beautiful area of the country, you will give tours of your TD at grocery stores, gas stations, campgrounds, etc.

I've tricked out my Pinecone a bit with LED lights, sound system in the cabin and galley, and this winter I'm adding a roof rack, 12V outlet in the galley, and putting a weatherproof cargo box on the front. Stay in touch when you customize, I'm always looking for great ideas!

Greg, I live in Everett Washington, but I travel around a lot. I'm interested in how you installed the sound system, I've been looking into doing the same but don't know where to start. I put in curtain rods and curtains on each door, an led night light as well as swap the galley and cabin lights for led. I also installed a gear hammock and coat hooks in the cabin as well as mounted a bottle opener in the galley. I want to make bigger side tables, install a hitch receiver on the back, make a changing room/side tent, and have been looking into the roof rack as well. After I finish with an idea, it seems like five more come to mind. I also had Mel make me a rear hatch cover that snaps on to help keep and hard rain out of the galley, which in Washington is a must. Hope to hear from you soon.

Bryce.

Hey Bryce - so great to meet you and a fellow Washingtonian! Here's some details on customizations I've made since June:

Lighting: Yeah I also swapped out the cabin lights for LED bulbs, much more battery-efficient. I also installed LED strip lighting in the cabin and galley, there's a photo of the lighting in my Gallery, check it out. I got the lighting strips at Costco but I think now they have them at Lowes, or order online. It's cool to change colors to whatever suits you at the moment, and the lights are remote-control: http://www.sylvania.com/en-us/innovation/videos/Pages/mosaic-flexible-led-strips.aspx

Curtains: My sister made me a set of awesome curtains, with pockets sewn into them to store stuff like flashlights, my DVD player, electrical adapters, whatever. Smart thinking on her part!

Hitch: My 2012 Pinecone has a hitch receiver in the back, but when I put my bike rack on it and went for a trip to Hood River, the weight of the bike+rack actually bent down the rear bumper! Fortunately I noticed it before something serious happened. I wonder if this is why they discontinued the rear hitch for your model year (which is 1 year newer). I took the trailer to a local welding shop and had a piece of tubing attached that made the rear hitch rock solid. When I get home tonight I'll post a photo and you can follow the link to my Gallery.

Sound System: Not too complicated: all you need to do is mount some speakers, run speaker wire to the Mini Amp, and plug in your ipod or whatever (laptop, DVD player, etc). Here are the parts I ordered which were not expensive at all...and seem to be holding up fine. One set for the cabin, and one set for the galley.
Mini Amp: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007TUSXEY/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ISBZ0G/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Roof Rack: I already have invested hundreds of dollars into a Yakima system for my tow vehicle, so I believe the best solution is going to be the Yakima side-mounted version, but I am still researching. If I can get crossbars that are long enough, I can fabricate some sort of changing room/side tent off of the roof rack, I think:
https://www.yakima.com/shop/rack-systems/permanent-installation/wide-body

Theater: A crazy idea I had which actually works well is that I purchased a 10x10 canopy cover with a privacy screen on one side. I also purchased a very small hand-held portable LED projector. So, my kids and I have actually had movie night under the canopy off the back of my TD with my laptop hooked into the galley sound system, and projecting the movie onto the privacy screen of the canopy. Add camping junk food and it's fun for everyone!

Electric Blanket: I've camped out in 40-degree weather with zero problems and stayed nice and warm underneath my electric blanket. Worked like a charm.

Well that's all I can think of for now!! Let me know if you have questions! Can you post a photo of your gear hammock??

Greg, I have my trailer in storage right now so I haven't gotten a chance to take pictures of my add-ons yet. Here is a link to the hammock and hammock hooks I got from work. It works pretty well for misc. clothing, towels, blankets and gear, but still have been tossing around Ideas of adding shelving or cubbies to put books and whatnot in..

Gear Hammock: http://www.sea-dog.com/groups/2334-gear-hammock
Hammock Hooks: http://www.sea-dog.com/groups/2337-hammock-hook

The adapter looks like its a 110V plug but says 12V. am I missing something there? Do you have to be hooked up to shore power to use your stereo or does it run off the battery?

I have also thought about getting a couple of these for either the Galley area or cabin. they seem like they would work great for storing small iteams readily available for use http://compactcampingconcepts.com/Store/en/8-net-mesh-storage-pouches

Hey Bryce! Thanks for the reply!

Yeah Brian and Sandi are excellent people. They always have a bottle of wine handy to host guests who come to see Miss Piggy (that's the name they gave their TD).

Regarding the Amp: Yes it runs off 110, but I also purchased a 12V inverter (or is it a converter, I always get confused). Since the unit only draws 2amps it works great off the battery: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UR154Y/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1. You have to watch those amps between the lights, stereo amplifier, recharging your phone/ipod and electric blanket!

I'm going to get the gear hammock and hooks for sure, excellent use of space up by the ceiling!

Hey and don't forget to get signed up for this cool new magazine: http://cooltears.com/

Can't wait to see 2 Pinecones in one place and enjoy a glass of red with you guys! :wine:
But for now we just have to look out the window and dream of next season.
