Panoramic roof ?

Postby justdan » Tue Oct 22, 2013 3:28 pm

Driving home tonight in my peugeot 307 sw , and it got me thinking .......
The peugeot has a panoramic roof with a sliding electric blind !
Any body done this on a TD ?
I'm very much in the planning stage of build 1 and thinking it would be a nice feature ....

Seen a few tears with roof windows, a couple with roof hatches, and one or two convertable tears with the roof spars installed and a removable canvas (or lexan?) top.

There are a few examples in the hall of fame.

I like the idea of a screened roof hatch. Open it when the weather is good, batten down the hatches in the hurricane.

But I just ended up with a standard roof vent and roof rack for extra cargo storage.

I am putting in a 12" x 36" fixed RV window in my roof so when I am lying down I can look at at the stars. Not a full open or clear top but I decided it would do. I will have a curtain that can be used to close it up if and when needed to block the light. I got my window off ebay. It took a while to find one not tinted but I finally did.

Here is what it looks like so far (My build is not done)

Before I started by build I also looked at Zach's build the X-II open top (link in post above) and also at Bob Henry's build with a clear lexan roof. Here is a link to a picture of his build.

Both build gave me excellent ideas for my build

You can search and find several posts on other builds with pictures of different windows and ideas

I put a moon roof with clear glass and a curtain in my Luxury Tent, very similar to the one posted by kayakdlk but mine was wider, (although skinnier). I positioned it where you were laying down in bed you were looking up at the sky... I got the used RV window on an eblah auction and actually called the sellers and they were so cool, they looked around for the size and the no-tint that I wanted. The no-tint is important for night time (and a curtain is important for day time LOL)

I keep trying to post a picture but my web host has apparently dumped... (not this site) sorry. I'll try again later.

We are far enough north that there is more of a problem keeping things dark in the morning, and if I want to see outside I am outside.

Kayakdlk, how did the fixed RV window/sunroof work out - did you have any trouble with leaking? Do you know the manufacturer/model? I am thinking of doing something similar in my build.

It has worked out great. I bought it off ebay and have no idea who the manufacture or model is. It is a fixed window with no weep holes like a slider has so no leaking. I looked for several months until I found the right size (wide and long enough), clear not dark smoked glass, and at the right price. I first bought an old plastic window from a a 70's camper and it arrived cracked. This one is glass and much better quality. My wife sewed curtains and I used plasticboat slide rails and snaps system to mount. Well worth the time and effort planning, finding and installing. Lets plenty of light in during the day and you can see the stars at night. The curtains allow you to close any time. Mode details and picture in my build journal

Thanks Dan, that is good to hear – glad it worked out for you. Your trailer turned out awesome by the way! I am just in the very beginning planning stages of mine, but I have found the forum to be incredibly helpful so far. Thanks again, Ben

Ah yes, looking at the night sky is such a delight, lying on my back within my Stealth Fighter teardrop, since the lift-up canopy has 5 windows. I love it.
