Follow My Build on Facebook!

Postby grant whipp » Wed Oct 23, 2013 9:51 pm

Hey, All!

I got talked into building a trailer for a customer ... lucky for him that I already had a couple of chassis and axles ready to go, or I'd have never agreed to do it (I really hadn't planned on building anymore commercial teardrops, just a spec unit here and there when I felt like it).

I have been wanting to do a "How-To" DVD for quite a while, and figured that if the subject trailer were already spoken for and a deposit received, that just might motivate me and move that project to the front burner. As it turns out, we don't have the time to do a proper job on the DVD, so I'm just documenting it on the teardrops.net Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/teardrops.net

I'll post a pic or two here occasionally, but you might just want to follow the project and the regular postings over there ... ;) ...! Here's a little teaser shot ... walls cut out and ready for final shaping/sanding/truing before getting paneled.

As always, then ...

Here are a couple of update pics ...

Only working on it between filling orders, walk-in customers, and other errands, but it's coming along ... ;) ...!

... notice that the "grain" is running side-to-side ... makes the bend over the curve much easier!

Rolled "turtle" to install the floor:

Installing the "skirts" :

Put a heavy coat of clear poly on the ceiling:

Here's what I used:
Image

Rolled right side up and placed on a roll-around "dolly":

Insulated the voids with 1/2" foil-backed foam-board insulation:
Image

Installed 1/4" luan sheathing over the insulation:

Basically, it's ready to be skinned with aluminum ... just need to insulate & sheath the doors. Picked up the mirror-polished side skins on Friday, have the roof in stock already.

Stay tuned, or better yet, watch the step-by-step on the Facebook page!

Grant:

Keep it rolling please, I've been enjoying watching how the big-guys do it (why'd I build mine ON the trailer?).

How'd you "clamp" that luan on the exterior?

Thanks for the kind words, Tony ... much appreciated! Not so sure about the "big guy" thing, though ... old guy is more like it ... ;) ...!

"Exterior" luan sheathing is glued & stapled on (I've got a whole selection of job-specific pneumatic staple guns), since I'm covering everything with aluminum ... if it were a woody, I'd do it a lot differently (at least, the mechanical-fastening part).

Stay tuned, as they say .. it'll all make sense when it's done ... :) ...!
