Hello from Iowa

Postby BookSaver » Sun Oct 27, 2013 9:24 am

I've been lurking TNTTT all summer and thought it was finally time to say hi before I start to chat in some other threads.

DH and I have been tent camping for many, many years. We are in that catch-22 situation that we don't go camping enough to justify the expense of buying a camper, but I think if we had a camper we would go out a lot more. It just takes so much time hauling all the gear out of the basement to pack into the cars, setting up camp, packing it all back into the cars, and then after the trip cleaning it all and carrying back to the basement. Also, sleeping on the ground isn't too bad because we have a good air mattress ... but convincing the knees/hips/back to cooperate to get up off the ground is getting more and more difficult. ;)

I am in love with teardrop campers, in spite of never having seen one in person. I love the efficiency and retro elegance of the shape, and that they are light enough to be pulled with a car. Neither of us has any building skills, so we will have to buy -- hopefully in the next year or 2.

All of the wonderful photos and descriptions on this forum have helped me make a lot of decisions about what would work best for us. Thanks to everyone here for being such a good resource, and very friendly as well!

Welcome to a great site.
We are in the S.E. corner of Iowa. If you are close and would like to look at a teardrop up close you would be welcome.
We have camped and traveled with a teardrop for 5 years. So much better than a tent and not all the work of a pop up.

Welcome to the Forum.
Buying is definitely instant gratification if your passion is not building things.
And Camping? It will bring a whole new meaning to camping for both of you.
We tent camped for years and years, and in 2012 we tent camped across 12 states including yours. But in 2013 we finally had our TD finished and camp and got to spend 44 nights in it, travelling at home here in B.C. and thru the 9 Western States.
We Love It!
It will definitely increase the amount you camp and will inspire you to increase your range as well.
And the People? You are going to Love all the new friends you will be meeting in this wonderful Teardrop family.
Not all tenters go around the campground socializing or introducing themselves to perfect strangers, but I will guarantee that you will never camp where there is another teardrop camper that will not meet.
Again, Welcome and good luck with your purchase,
Don't wait 2 years! Remember you never get time back.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for leaving the safety of the shadows. Jim has a beautiful trailer and would be worth the invitation to see it. My 2 are stored in Galena IL. If that is closer, you are welcome to see mine. Teardrops are the next level up from tents. Mine stays loaded all season. All I do when I want to use it is add my clothes and perishable food. Hook it up and go. It makes camping so much easier. Get to your site, back it in. Open the hatch. Get out your chair. Sit down. Start enjoying the trip. There is no easier way to travel.

Welcome to the forum!!! before you decide that it will be forever you might want to check out the foamie section. I thought I would never be able to get mine off the ground Building in foam has been great. I started with the trailer and a few tools, getting it built was a project and I finally did it. then because I could not lift a piece of plywood I decided to go Foam. It can be done. I am very proud of building I have had a lot of fun and yes it has been challenging but that has been part of the fun. Finally I am down to the last building part, but I have all winter to accomplish it. I am 63 and I don't want to get on the ground I can't get up!!!! Good luck on what ever you decide to do!!!

We are in the middle of eastern Iowa. I'm starting a list of you who have TDs within a few hours, so someday we can drive your direction for a tour.

Mary ~ Thanks for the vote of confidence but honestly, I would not feel safe pulling any trailer that I had a hand in building. :NC I can sew practically anything ... but that would put me back in tentland.
