Opinions on taking your trailer through a drive-thru

Postby Woodbutcher » Sun Oct 27, 2013 7:46 pm

I sometimes see guys with landscape trailers in line. Only once have I pulled the teardrop through a drive-thru. There was no place to park and I was real hungry. What do others do?

My initial reaction to this question is why would you go through a drive through when there's cast iron in the galley?

To answer your question though, it would depend upon the layout of the drive-thru. If it's a straight line or has gentle curves, I don't see an issue, but remember that trailers don't always follow right in the tracks of the tow vehicle. Don't get yourself in the situation where you're caught between curbs and a building or something and can't negotiate a corner.

Ditto.

As my "uncle" taught me "the plan depends upon the terrain and situation". Just make sure you understand the situation and terrain before acting.

This is one reason I build my trailers so the wheels of the trailer are close to the same track as the intended TV. I do not have to worry as much about the wheel sticking out very far. I have taken it through drive throughs, fast food and banks. Two weeks ago I had to retrieve my broken down car with a normal car hauling trailer behind my 1989 Mazda pickup. Man that trailer stuck way out. Luckily it was not far and on county roads.

I always scope out the drive thru before making a run for it.
We've been through a lot of drive thru's without any problems but I pay particular attention to where the teardrops wheels are at all times, swing wide.
If you don't feel comfortable with drive thru's and teardrops don't do it.

Yep, I do it all of the time, anywhere my car tires can go, my TD trailer tires can go also. Mine's a 4x8, so that helps. Swing wide.

I too have been thru with Miss Piggy.
But, my golden rule is: I do not drive into places I can't back out of with the trailer.

I always take mine through. It helps me appreciate my TD after many years with a 25' TT and an F350. I like being able to sneak through with my VW Jetta and TD and get on my way. Even better is to find a nice rest stop or overlook and make lunch in the teardrop, but french fries are one of my guilty pleasures.

For me It would depend on drive-thru... Some have a pretty tight turn in them so they could make them fit property..... IF bend are short/tight, NO... If its a straight shot, maybe...

I do it all the time, rarely do I ever have to think about it. About the only time I worry is when I'm pulling the canned ham, and then all I worry about is the overhead clearance. Just another advantage of tiny trailering ... ;) ...!

I just did it tonight. I swung wide and the tires didn't 't even come close to the curbs. And, I had already driven over 7 hrs and still had 3 more to get home. I didn't 't want to cook..I wanted to get home!!

Some of you might know that I have a Jack-in-the-box head hanging in the window of my woody. Once when I drove through a Jack-in-the-box joint, I told the gal at the window that I had her boss in my trailer back there. "Oh, sure you do" she said and I told her to just watch and see as I drove forward for her inspection..........Hmmm, no response, what a waste of effort. However, as I rounded the exit lane, 5 Jack-in-the-box employees rushed out the front door, to take a look at what the gal at the window had seen and told them. Just had to share that bit of whimsey.
