Port hole windows

Postby prohandyman » Mon Feb 18, 2013 12:35 pm

Thought I would like some port hole windows on the 46 Kit rebuild, but the windows were already rectangle,
so just cut some aluminum from the scrap pieces to fit and siliconed it to the glass! I wonder how ling they will stay on?

Also check out my imitation rivet detail... been wanting to try this for awhile!

I like the rivet detail, Dan ... ... not too sure about the "porthole" though ... ... ;) ...!

But, I sure would like to know where you are sourcing those mill-finish crank-out windows though ... :D ...!

As always, my Friend ...

Grant
I have a guy on the hook to buy the 46 and he wants a gothic, vintage look and suggested the port holes. At the moment the actual port hole is a piece of alum slid in on the inside of the glass so it is removable if not wanted.
Now for the mill finish window it self....they are not available are they? I really wanted the look though....so I sanded and painted the black anodized ones! Don't tell anyone!
This is the look we are using as a guide...

I used a Porthole window (Didn't open) on my Pac-Man trailer only because when it opened a rectangle window would have sat out of level.

O.K., Dan ... ya got me on that one ... ...!

I have to do the same thing if I want the aluminum look. It's not that hard, but damn, I wish the mfgs. would just make the mill-finish available again.

Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out! Keep up the great work, and as always ...

I wanted a port hole window for the potty area of the caboose and so I went to my favorite place in the whole world ( GoodWill) and picked up a large cut glass dessert plate about 14" in diameter.

Instant frosted glass privacy window :D

Lets in the light without worry about your privacy.

P.S. the 100 % silicone bed will last until you cut it away. We used it as a sealant in glass piping for nasty chemical reactions in a previous job and you need a real sharp knife and extreme care to seperate the joints. You do have to allow a couple days for it to firm up so best to leave it clamped tight and not disturb it until the cetil alcohol smell is disapated.

I am considering port hole type windows in the bunkbed area of my design just to let some light in for the boys. May have to keep my eyes peeled at the thrift shops for fancy plates :)

I found these on Ebay. But they are available through CR Laurence. Any glass shop should be able to order them for you. Sorry I don't have a close up. If anyone wants better pics let me know. They are 12" and do not open.

These came from a marine consignment shop in town. $20 apiece, they open and have screens. Tinted glass. They had more and I wish I had got 'em but they opened a new store in Ma. and I think they went there to clean out the local place and give the new place some working stock.
I have a pair of heavy duty bronze ones that I intended to use but didn't. Maybe I'll make them available but they wouldn't be able to go cheap. I'll have to think on that...
It's amazing how much of the yachting world (well maybe the recreational boating industry) translates to the teardrop world!

Len,
I'm working on a sleeper on a 40x48" harbor frame. I'm trying to figure out the canvas attachments inside the hatch. Your pacman seems to do just what I need can you elaborate on this, maybe show a photo of the inside where its attached. I get the snaps on the outside edge but need help as to where an how attached inside without effecting opening and closing. Did you make a sheet mockup to get sizes correct? Hope to get my build journal started soon. I'm using Roly's stacker as insiration.

I love your siding. What is it and where did you get it?

The siding is painted aluminum, and I got it from Frank Bear in Michigan. You can get an assortment of colors. Vintage Technologies is his company.
