teardrops vs. toyhauler conversions

Postby Crabapple » Wed Nov 06, 2013 10:17 am

I want to get my first ever camping trailer next season, to be pulled by a Subaru Crosstrek which is rated 1000 lb unbraked and 1500 lb braked tow capacity. Started out looking at Little Guys, Silver Shadows etc but now also have Microlite Wazat and Cargolite on my radar. The upcoming T@G is definitely of interest too! There are obvious advantages and disadvantages to the teardrops vs toyhaulers but I would like to hear from anyone that previously had a teardrop and then got a Cargolite or equivalent. Are you happy you did or do you regret or miss having the teardrop? I am mostly interested in bush road boondocking where there will not be anything like picnic tables, facilities, etc etc. It will just be my spouse and I and sometimes our 80lb dog.

i towed a few trip with my little trailer/teardrop and my crosstrek. My trailer was 5X8 and 750lbs. That was perfect.

My only regret is i had a permanent kitchen/galley at the back. If it was to redo, i would have a removable mobular galley so i can use the trailer as a toy hauler/cargo trailer for some occassion. something like the cargo lite is very nice and usefull...

I m now building another much bigger teardrop tiny trailer....6.5X13 feet 1000lbs trailer. I dont know how the crosstrek will handle is as it will have a much bigger face in the wind. But i m making a modular kitchen at the back so i can use the trailer as a toyhauler when needed.

For myself I don't need the camper to do double duty, I have a utility trailer for hauling stuff around when needed. So if I go with a Cargolite, it would rarely if ever be used for anything but a camper. I agree on the weight..750-900 with low frontal area into the wind is ideal, which really makes the Wazat attractive!
