Testing the Coleman BlackCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Black ... r/13228605

Time Temp Half way up the wall/ Temp near the ceiling

6:15 37/39
6:17 43/52
6:22 46/59
6:25 50/63
6:26 52/63
6:28 52/64
6:29 54/64
6:33 54/66

Went inside, and opened the oxygen intake from the cookie tin candle heater. Also added a heat destratification measure... aka

6:40 48/57
6:42 57/61
6:43 59/63
6:45 61/64
6:48 63/64
6:50 63/66

Went out and sat inside for a couple minutes... There's no insulation in there yet. The walls are really cold. Took a photo for you... verified that the fan is running on low...

closed it back up and monitored the temps again...

7:01 59/64
7:05 61/66
7:13 61/68
7:27 61/68

So it's looking like 3000 btus will only warm the pod up from 37° to about 68°.

Insulation will help. But this is no job for candles...

I think they need a small wood stove as described in previous post's....I would frame out a cubby hole in the side and line it with durock concrete board make sure their is air space around the stove and even make a steel mesh saftey door for the inside to cover the cubby hole to keep flamables getting in contact with the stove....

I own that heater never used it, I have had the fan for years it is the fan in the Box Kite!!
Ron,

I wouldn't use that... here's why...

I like the candle idea and have thought of using the heater outside near the gallery.

Big Lots has cookie tins without the cookies or popcorn so you dont have to eat it. Yuck! Not a fan of canned popcorn.
Couple of bucks for some nice sized ones.

I think insulation is the key here, 1" of solid wood is R1, not sure about OSB or plywood, but since most of us build with much less than 1" of wood in our walls and roof, insulation will make or break any cold weather camping.
The candle heater is a suplement to the bodys in the trailer, each person is considered good for 340 BTU's or so (same as a 100 watt bulb).
In an uninsulated pod, with the propper ventilation, candles (50 btu) won't make a noticeable change.
Interesting that the candles went out, a larger air intake and exhaust may be needed, or the position of the air transfer ports may need to be adjusted.
Now we need a volunteer to spend the night in an insulated pod or tear and record each hour....

for me it is the thought of wind blowing the exhaust back into the trailer, or blowing the candles out, having the intake and exhaust face the same way keeps that from happening

You would need to build a heat barrier on your walls cause they can get really hot, enough to heat a large tent in freezing temps. I have had one in my 'To-build' list for a while.

Those are typically liquid fueled, and very dangerous in something like a pod or a teardrop.

Mike...

The ones I have seen burn small sticks, no liquid fuel.

the problem with a small woodstove, it can only take small loads, waking up cold every couple hours and having to feed/relight the stove beats shivering all night, but I would prefer a heat source that would burn 8 hours or so.

do they have a burn time that lasts for a night? the only power free stoves I know of that are made "portable" for hunters, and rated for all day/ all night http://www.wisewaypelletstoves.com/
http://www.clarrypelletstove.com/
both of them are aimed at tent or drafty cabin use, serious overkill for for a tear, not to mention the protability problem...
the prices on both make that $800 benjamin marine stove installed in a CT seem very reasonable...

missed that it was gas, I like the price
with that many BTU's I'd have to sleep with the windows open...

I like the price too. The next closest one that works is the Everest forced air furnace http://www.dyersonline.com/atwood-12-00 ... -only.html but it's almost $500.

But isn't the Nu Way gas too big for a teardrop or sleeping pod?

I can see that small propane stove ^^^^ that Mike posted working in a slightly larger TD, slouchy or TTT, but it would command a lot of space in a TD for fire proofing buffer zone, wouldn't it?

The water vapor given off might be welcome humidification in the dry air that typically comes with cold weather.

Makes me think twice about a white gas lantern option, or even a scaled down propane version of the cookie tin furnace.

Here's the forced air furnace in my teardrop...

I can't see how I can do that with the Nu Way propane stove.

replace one door with the stove mounted in a box that sticks out far enough to give clearance, make the door reversable for towing? (the box would stick into the trailer for towing, then hang sticking out for camping) like the guy with the tiny potbelly stove on here did, more or less
The nu-way requires a chimney right?

That sure looks like the best solution for some one who plans on camping in cold weather on a regular basis.

Nice and new, too. How does it compare on cost?
