Birthday Lantern

What do you think? Would this all be original? Never seen that warmer thing before, wrong nut on top. You guys got me hooked on finding my birthday lantern, missed what I am thinking now was a good one. This sat on Ebay for a long time with a buy it now of $100 and has now gone to auction. I'm planning on using whatever one I end up buying.

The warming plate is a new one for me too. The igniter, plate, and parts safe are all accessories that would have been added, but could have been purchased at the same time if the were manufactured when the lantern was. The parts safe alone will bring what the current bid is, so keep an eye on it. The lantern is in good shape and looks unrestored. Keep us posted.

Ya that is not a coleman part. the warning plate.

There is a 9-57 220E on Ebay for 20 now and 25 shiping. with a wooden case.

They did not make a 220F or 228F in my mouth but instead made a sears and Robuck big hat and little hat models.

Any thoughts on a 200A model vs a 220 or 228? Is one worth more? The double has to give off more light but any other benefits to the various models? Like I said, I am planning on using what ever I buy. I have a couple of the battery lanterns and they don't work well. When it is cold the fluorescent bulb does not want to light up.

I never wanted a lantern but now I am going to have to find me my birthday lantern. All this talk got me wanting one.

For the most part, it is just a preference thing. I like the curves of the single mantel lanterns. Some like the big hats. I like to think that running one mantel also burns less fuel. They sure put out plenty of light ( they didn't call them "sunshine of the night" for nothing). As to value, that is individual preference, also. What is it worth to have your birthday lantern? The only ones that are worth much are really old or really rare (think Gold Bond). They made so many that the value is in the using more than the collecting. The memories that you attach to it each time you use it will far outweigh any monetary value it will ever have.

The little lanterns are great, still plenty bright enough for working and camping. the double mantels put out more light but use more fuel. It is 6 dozen to one as they say on what they are worth to you. I know I looked forever until I found 5-64 red 200a After I got my first one Bam so many more showed up. I now have 5 200a birthday, well 4 actually but I have a 6-64 with a messed up sticker on the tank but have a shiny repainted 5-64 tank for it. I would love to have a 220f and 228f green lantern but they did not make them that month and made lanterns for sears instead. You don’t need both unless you want them. If you want a collection of thing you gotta have at least two other wise it is not a collection


Here is my birthday stash. The Jug and model 502 stove are all 5-64 the rad case is not dates. I still looking of a 2 or 3 burner stove with a tank stamped 564 on the tabs and the sears with a small vent hat that is not to high priced.




Again it is all up to you, and what it is worth. It is nice to have one that is the same age as you are:)

decisions decisions. I like the smallness of the 200A in keeping with my trailer. But I'm also liking that box with the 220E. Not sure where in my trailer I can store either one. You suppose I could add a seal and mount that box to the side of my trailer? If I could do that now when I pull up to a camping spot in the dark or come back to camp after dark it would be handy.

The 200A in the ebay auction looks to be a really nice lantern w/a tool safe. I would request more pics of the vent before I bid on that lantern. If the vent is perfect or near perfect I would try to buy it.

So I got the 220E today. Ended up at $75 with shipping. I have these lanterns that we inherited from my wife's uncle. We were given these and then 5 others were distributed to others. Left to right we have his wooden replica he made(quite the woodworker), a 242C with 8 & 3 on the bottom, another 242C with 7 and 4, and an unmarked with 50 and 11 on the bottom.

Cantputt, can you post some more pics of that one on the right? Maybe some closeups of the bottom and some with the vent and globe removed? Trying to identify it for you.

That wooden lantern sure is cool. Those others should clean up very nicely.

That was my first thought too, but it has the early style collar and he says the date is 11/50. A magnet test would determine if it's a brass fount or steel. The 200's had brass.

Kevin were there 200s made with a Green vent. That is an old style vent. Interesting.
