While I am still working on the galley. up for discussion are the doors, both have the same problem they got wet where it was not painted and the canvas swelled up where it was not glued and got a bit of mold. I sprayed it with clorox and no worry! just discolored and stained. I live in the south and things like mold happen it is not the deadly Black Mold but the mold that is bothersome and happens to be the color black. Dark brown and uccky. maddening OK the doors even dry will rub at the top and bottom where the folds of canvas are located. What type and you know me be specific show me a picture or name of the type of rubber seal I should use. the water has to go. My brother had to use the sander and sand off some of the canvas to close the doors when I was in TX because it got so bad.























I got the doors sorta finished for the two trips IN and TX my brother and I worked on the doors some but did not get them dry proofed. Any suggestions or information or pictures will be muchly appreciated. and for my simple mind please keep it simple. Thank you.

Mary, can you trim 1/8 to 1/4 inch off of the top, bottom and latch side then re-wrap with a new piece of canvas? Probably would have to adjust the latch plate, too.

Do you have enough overlap on your door flange to do that and still have a place for the gasket to squeeze?

KC I figured the best way to would be to cut off the doors but with a jig saw will be difficult, and the only other saw is a circular saw. So see with my saw you cant saw what you see because it is too small to see and saw So I thought I would take them off and sand off the edges but it did not occur to me to cover it again with canvas but I could. Or I could just paint the edges with gripper and exterior paint. that should seal the edges.

Mary, remember the hot iron trick ? You can heat and soften the glue holding the canvas on , peel it back , cut/trim the door and then glue it back down again ...

Mary , made a sketch of how I did my door... looking down , you can see how the skin wraps completely around the door frame and then the door stop piece and gasket are put on over that ...I caulked the join of the covered frame and stop piece..then stuck the rubber gasket on ... been fine ever since , and we certainly have checked it with a critical eye... No leaks !!! I assume the foam drip cap thing up top does a good job ... that area is always dry, and even after some storms...

I didn’t think pictures would explain as well as a drawing ...everything’s already done, the good bits covered up...

Hi Mary,
Here's a picture of how I did mine. It's very similar to Doc's (GPW) except the skin doesn't go under the door stop.
It's been sitting out in the weather the past couple weeks. I just went out and took these pix.
I painted oil based paint over the Gripper and don't have any swelling at all.
A little bit of water does run under the bottom of the door, but I plan on putting a gutter over the door to help with that.

Tac, your doors look very similar to mine I admit i was in a big hurry and didn't take the time to cut out the extra material off but I guess i will now. I knew I was going to have to work on the doors but it will be after the new year have to wait till I get the money for the seal. Where do I get the seal? I have never bought any at all. Lots of fun.

Thanks GPW for the great drawing. I can really follow that. At least I see where to put the seal, but how do I attach it?

Mary , I painted over everything... and the rubber seal with the little ridges, had a sticky backing on it ... didn’t stick well at first , so I added a couple staples in “stragetic” areas.. After the door was smushed on it for a while , it stuck OK ... I used the same stuff on the house front door which had a small air gap , all better now ... and it stuck to the wooden door frame just fine .... Guess it didn’t want to stick over the freshly painted surface on the trailer door ... ? I got mine at Loew’s ..

Thanks KC and GPW I will have to wait till after Christmas, money is very tight right now. There is enough to keep me busy untill then and I have to find the aluminum hinges too. I also need windows. I would love to "make" windows but I just don't have the tools. So I will have to save up the money to buy them. Thanks again!

Mary , this was the hinge I got ... very Reasonably priced, cut one in half for the FS door , the other will fix Foamie’ #1’s rusty hinge problem... http://teardroptrailerparts.com/2_1_2__ ... Hinge.html
They do make a Thicker one, but didn’t feel that was needed...

For Thrifty windows , you may want to look around at local junkyards, windows on old vans, trucks ... usually for cheap , depending how much you like to haggle ...and they usually are in better shape than the vehicles... Some of the old Kustom' van conversions had great windows added on , with trim rings inside that would fit foam thickness..

GPW I will check on the hinges and I found a junk yard today , unfortunately I was traveling with a friend and we were going to her daughters graduation, but it is nice and big with lots of vehicles and a few trailers. I will get back there after Christmas. i hate having to put things off but at least I can work on the inside. But with my schedule I wont be able to do so till after the new year. Thanks for the information I will be using it after New Year.

Great topic, thanks for posting.

Quick question.... on page 14 you said GA doesn't tax trailers under 1000# capacity... this was not the case for my latest trailer 3 years ago... ~700# capacity HF boat trailer I bought brand new for $300 and they tax assessed it at $750 and I pay a tax for my tag for it every year. How can I avoid this with my next HF trailer build (which will be a foamie specifically because of this topic that you told me about on the noob forum).
