Doug, I tried a temporary trolly top on my 1/4 Nelson Stacker, but it made it so top heavy that when I tipped it up on end, it kept falling over on it's top............
Roly, and btw, I think your Rocketear is stunning.
Doug...the trolly top on the Rocketeer is .... beyond words!!! The scale and theme and paint are just right!!! The trolly top absolutely looks like it belongs there...you could not have done better... and it was well worth your time and expense!!!
The way I see it...all the Tears seem to go on a scale that ranges from the very functional (like the off road and evac types), to the very artistic (such as the Rocketeer). Somewhere in between are the very classic, and classic designs modified to suit a variety of sizes., tastes, and needs. I can't even imagine what the next great Tear will look like...but I do know that it hasn't been invented yet...and it may even even have another trolly top!!!!
thanks everyone...I think a trolley top really adds to the build. Yeah, it takes more time...but what about all this talk about "tear drop" time? It's not for everyone, but it does make for a unique profile and an opportunity to do some more radical changes to a standard design. Now to clad one in aluminum...well, that might be more of a challenge, especially if you don't have a well equipped sheet metal shop to work in, and the background to do it. Probably tig up all the corners and make the top as a 1 piece of aluminum, heavier material than what most are skinning with. I'm just sort of playing around with a new design. Doug
Kerry...I'd love to have a tig machine...but as a hobbiest, don't have the coin to drop on one and really can't justify buying at this time. I'll have to stick with the wood and epoxy construction for the time being. I dropped too much in tools on the last build, things have just gotten worn out and needed to be replaced. I'd love to tig a whole body together however. Doug
Sure, it can be done, just build it beefy enough to handle the load. But the smallest unit possible would be the best fit. I don't think you'd want to get to out of hand on the height on the raised portion. It may need to also be tubbed with a portion of the AC unit sitting below the original roof line to make it all fit. In the tubbed portion, run a drain line out. Doug
