Mantle Training

OK, I have my first gas lantern. I put new mantles on it, burned them and fired up the lantern. It was burning nicely when I noticed one of the mantles had a hole in it so I shut it down. Need some education. Did I not burn them correctly? Too much pressure too soon? I have no clue what I am doing.

No you did nothing wrong. Let me guess --- you used modern Coleman Brand mantles . I bet you just bought them somewhere?

New Coleman mantles suck. Get yourself some old mantle like gold tops or silklites , or a good modern alternative are Peerless brand. All are available from oldcolemanparts.com

OK, I have some Peerless on the way. So what causes the holes?

What makes the holes? Crappy Coleman Mantles. They are not made as well as they were at one time. I covet the old Silklites and Peerless. They hold up better than the new Coleman mantles. Good catch on the hole in the mantle. The globe can crack and break if the gasses are aimed at the glass for to long.

Mike at oldcolmanparts told me that most are going for the peerless brand. I have been having really good luck with the older Coleman Gold top mantles. I did try some peerless and they seem to be good too.

Like Dawn said the new Coleman mantles are not made well. They are thin and fragile.

so are the Peerless and Gold Tops new old stock or are they current manufacture?

The Peerless are currently in production in the Philippines. The Gold Tops are old out of production Colemans. Some of the folk on the collector forum say they have good luck with the Colemans. Seems they turn the fuel on while the mantle is burning out and let it light up. This I do not know as Peerless are cheaper than the new Colemans. Welcome to the inner wizard world of GPA lights

Yes Yes the Wizard of GPA. Magic really if you think of it. A cool liquid pumped through a metallic machine and fire made into super bright light at the magic mantle. Not long ago in history we would be burned at the stake for owning such a machine. Not to mention hoarding piles of them.

Only coleman I ever blew a hole in was because of a Missing screen in the turner tube of a 290 adjustable. But I have had the coleman 21 just fall off in traveling in the camper.

I have had mantles of several persuasions fall off. I have started to tie surgeons knots in them. So far so good. I think the problem is mostly a user problem. Old fingers tying tiny knots.
