Wood and canvas restoration

Alfie your restoration is beautiful. I love your attention to detail. How did you come up with the water proofing for the canvas. That seems to be an old recipe. 40 years ago when I was so little, My neighbor used something like that to cover a sheet of canvas he was putting over the little dog house and shed he had in the yard. I just remember he would heat it a little then paint it on then heat it again then paint a little he said it has to be at the right temperature to soak and not runoff and not get stiff. I would love to see it in person on my Big Out West trip in 2015. you did a great job.

The past 40 years or so they have moved completely away from using canvas to using hard materials. Most anything that is cheap and will last a few years. As they do not see highway speeds other than wind storms there has been a bunch of materials used. And I would imagine that many older ones also has been covered with non traditional materials. Any thing that is cheap and looks like it will work and not kill the herder to quickly.

Mary, I searched for recipes on-line and then watched youtube videos about application. It is a common Civil War recipe, so the reenactors like to use it.
The trailer canvas has airplane dope on it. That is the tautening paint used in the late 1930's on cloth airplanes. I had to run tests to make sure the waterproofing wax treatment wouldn't harm the paint finish. Luckily I had saved the scraps from the rotten spot, and used that for the tests.

These skin boats covered in 8 oz polyester.. are hauled at speed when trailered, and run over all kinds of obstacles in the water that would normally rip canvas..That is why canvas is not the material of choice for kayaks.....

You want something really tough try nylon.....
Contrary to their delicate looks, SOF boats are very tough and durable. I have run mine upon many rocks, across submerged logs, stumps and tree limbs and I have yet to make more than a small mark on the hull.

Thanks Alfie, yep you are on my list, I havent decided on the dates and since I have a long way to go on this trip I don't have any solid dates yet. Just keep checking back here near Jan and Feb of 2015 I will be asking for driveways for camping about then and getting directions. I really like you work.
