Towing a TDT and a boat

Postby OzarkRay » Thu Dec 19, 2013 1:01 pm

So, here in Arkansas, any time there is a three-day weekend, I see guys towing standard camping trailers which are, in turn, towing a boat (or ATV or Jetski) trailer . I'm guessing it's legal here. I'm wondering if anyone does a similar thing with their TDT. I've got a relatively lightweight aluminum jonboat on a trailer and I was wondering if there was a way to mount a hitch on the rear of the TDT for it. I go fishing over weekends in February, and my trips would be much more enjoyable if I had it to sleep in. I'm making my TDT on a 5X8 non-folding trailer from Northern Tool. The steel for the frame isn't the thickest, but I'd bet that with a little Arkie ingenuity, it could accommodate the hardware for a hitch kit. I'm assuming I would also need to add brakes to both the teardrop and the boat. Anyway, I was curious to hear if anyone had any experience doing this. Thanks!

It's legal in some states, and not in others. I've seen it much more commonly where a pickup pulling a 5th wheel tows a boat.

When I lived in Michigan, it required a special endorsement on your driver's license, called "Recreational Double".

If your jon boat is really light, why not consider a roof rack on either the TV or the camper?

I have a "vintage" VW Beetle that I use as MY tow vehicle... I bought a 15 ft aluminum canoe fer my "boat" and I put the canoe on the roof rack on the VW and I have no need fer "another " trailer fer the boat ! ( Haven't found a good woman who can paddle fast enuf fer me to water ski... yet )

Check your state regulations. In Kansas you can tow double, but the front trailer needs active brakes. no brakes required for the rear trailer. the combination also must not exceed 70 feet in length including the tow vehicle. You also want the heaviest trailer in front. Also be aware that towing behind a TD, the rear trailer's tongue weight will lighten the tongue of the TD. You will have to compensate for this with ballast in the TD to do it safely. Better to find a cartop solution IMHO.

I think it's also legal in Kentucky. I've seen Marine dealers pulling tandems to get boats (in quantity) to boat shows every spring.

Putting the boat on top of the tow vehicle is probably the most logical thing to do, really. I have a friend who had a similar boat who would put it on top of his Ram 3500 van. Either way, I need to invest in a larger vehicle!
