Its been 2 years and your still turning great looking wood things Way to go keep it up wish I had the tools and place for this kind of hobbies

All this wood turning brings back memories of when I got into woodworking in the 70's I worked at a waterbed factory and I started turning bowls with a machine I made from a simple shaft with 2 pillow block bearings ,a step pulley on one end and a face plate on the other....I would use pine 2x10 alternately glued up and used a manila folder glued up in between the lid piece...I got to where I didn't want to hogg out all that wood inside the bowl so I made a jig to cut the centers out of 2x10 using the overhead pinrouter we had.....Those were the days making tables out of headboard parts etc....

By the way My Grandfather had one of these when my mom was little I have it in pics. stored in my shop...

C'mon guys! This is a teardrop forum! Guess I'd better chime in with a turning I did for my tear and hijack this thread to get it rolling down the teardrop trail.

This was a fix for the old paper towel roll issue ––unrolling while I'm rolling down the road. Here's the spindle. You can see a 1/4" spline mortised in the side of the spindle to lock the roll in place:


And here's the travelling lock in place to lock the spindle when I'm rolling down the road and my paper roll ain't unrolling. Note the slot cut in the side arm to accept the spline:


And here's the cherry towel holder locked and loaded. Ready to not unroll as I roll down the road:


No unrolling on my tears shakedown cruise from Idaho to Southern Utah last month.


Cherry may be my favorite wood to turn. Nice and clean. I'm not sure I've ever seen any serious tear out from it. Perhaps I need to find a green cherry bowl blank!

Anyway, been at it for just over three hours. Made 5 different candle holder blocks that hold between two and six tea light candles and their glass holders.

Day ended up costing about six hours to make this lot, but I am happy, been a while since I was really productive.

These fit really tightly into the base holes, so will not get knocked off.



First lot done.




Then came in, had some lunch (sandwich n coffee) after whih I hand sharpened all my tools to a silly keeness.

Then grabbed this lump, lined it up and got going......



Making this pair of tea light holders.

The dark details is created by forcing a tool against the wood at speed, so that it burns the wood.



Lastly, pulled a piece of oak from the firewood offcut bucket and thought I would give it a go.

I made the ashtray for my mate Era, who is also known as Oldone Racing, he builds championship winning Mazda Rotary motors.

When he smokes in his workshop, he usually has incense burning too. So an incense burner/ashtray.




And that is the lot for today.



I have some more time off before year end, so may just go to the shed for more therapy.

I also have to build a wheeling trolley for the compressor I recently bought.

But the weather sucks big time right now......

I like to post as we all learn from each other.

Had another day leave today.

Filled it with all sorts of yard jobs, and went to the farm to see if Charlie had some bits of weathered fire wood for me to make stuff from.

Came back with a few bits off his firewood pile, and a couple of longer bits of old oak.



My favorite piece once cleaned up was this former top of a gate post.

Not sure if it will become a candle holder, table lamp or possibly a large mantle clock as it is a good 300mm high.



Next up and interesting bit of fire wood. Sanded it and cut the top and bottom so that I could work with it.
Belt sander, hand sanded and then mounted inside this old wooden tray, it will be good as a tealight holder on someone's windowsill or a shelf.



Next up I made Charlie the farmer (remember the combine harvester last year) a doorstop for the farm house.

Handle from some rope I plaited from one piece and thenfed through two sides of the hole I drilled in the lump, and fixed internally in the holes.





I still have some more pieces to process, but need to think of the best stuff to make to maximize the effect of their scars etc.

Hi KC, I have a 1.2 meter one as well, it is drying out at the moment, may end up as a pair of tall table lamps.

It has even more metal and wire stuck to it, typical of a 40 year old farm gate post.

I will let you in on my secret, I buy a lot of large old metal files and sharpen them for tools, it allows me to create different shapes and sizes of tools.

My buddy Don, over in Searcy, Arkansas is a bit of a cigar smoker, and asked me to turn him an ashtray for his Cigars.

Sorry Tony, I use whatever I can lay my hands on.Often Oak, pine, Tulip etc.


Thought I would add this in because I was pleased with the result.

Nicola's mum passed away early in January.
She was always a keen gardener and over the years also rescued many animals.

She had a small statue of St Francis of Asisi in the garden and when she died, it came home with us.



I had walked around with the idea of making a small shelter for him to stand in, in the garden.

This morning I popped down to the local pub who always has a pile of wood from fencing jobs waiting for the next bonfire. So I fetched a few old weathered feather boards.



I also grabbed some 12mm ply from the garage and cot some to shape, making it up as I went along.



Knocked up a nice AA road patrol house for St Francis.

Also cut out a Cross on the bandsaw to fit inside the shelter.



Once completed I posted him out on a bit of railway sleeper in the garden so he can keep an eye on everything.



Nicola was happy.... she also cooked me dinner.
