Who's Towing with a Honda Fit?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Kia Rio has a bit more horsepower than the Fit but it is in a similar category so good to know.

Brakes do seem like a good idea. I always prefer them when they are an option. I will plan to add them to whatever I decide on.

I have a number of friends and family members who have purchased 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks to pull occasional campers and skidsteers. I pull with my 1/2 ton all the time and it has never been an issue. Take it slow, and yes, trailer brakes. Other than that they are fully capable.

While I was shopping tear drops I was into my local Little Guy dealership in Muskoka in central Ontario.
I am almost positive during our conversations that he told me he has often towed tear drop trailers with a Honda Fit.
Maybe send Andy an email...here's his website:
http://www.aarvrentals.ca/

ps - even if I am mistaken on the vehicle, Andy is very knowledgeable re towing with small vehicles in general and needs to be
since a chunk of his business is rentals.

I'm even more certain now because there is at least one photo on his website showing a red Fit towing a teardrop

There is also a factor of who uses the teardrop? Is it just for you?
All four feet wide: The Little Guy Joey, Rascal or Lil Deuce (curb weight 540lbs) would likely be small and light enough.
Also, they have a new fiberglass model called a My Pod with a single door in the back.

It will be for me, my wife, and our two children (2 and 10 months). So we'd like to get the biggest one we can tow. We are pretty minimalist and have been tenting plenty with the 2 year old. We really just want a warm place in inclement weather and the more I think about it a galley. We all end up in our queen size bed plenty of nights and while it's not my preferred sleeping method, it does work. Ideally I'd like to add mini-canvas bunks for the kids but I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. Need to pick a teardrop first.

Consider a Microlite Wazat...they will customize it for you too. It was on my short list and I would have had it built without seperating from the trailer feature, which would save even more weight!

I see Honda Fit with ProLite Eco model (750 lbs)

ProLite is an ultra light travel trailer manufacturer located in Quebec, Canada.

The Prolite Eco was on my short list too, and actually ended up buying their smallest trailer a few weeks ago, the Suite. It is even lighter at 550-600 lb empty and I think it will suit my needs well. I tow it with a Subaru Crosstrek MT which is rated for 1000 lb unbraked and 1500 lb braked in NA and it tows great! But the bed area of the Suite would be too small for this couple plus a 2yr old and an infant, Eco should be good for them though!
my Suite...

After months of lurking, looking, and researching tear drops, toy hauler conversions, etc etc...
I just purchased a lightly used 2013 Prolite Suite! Totally stoked now !! Picked it up in Scarborough...

Towed just great behind my Suby Crosstrek north to my home in Muskoka...

I also tow my tear with a car that isn't rated to tow anything. I got the reciever hitch off of fleabay. with the car set up like the picture shows 75 mph wasn't an issue. Pulling the tear with two boats on the roof and the A/C on, the temp never got much higher than normal. The focus has big disc brakes as part of the sporty handling design so stopping was never an issue.
I took it easy for the first hour of our trip to get used to the handling, extra weight, and keep an eye on temps, braking etc. After that I drove like a normal Boston, MA driver (act like you don't care how close the other guy is, only back down if the other vehicle looks like it won a few collisions, go fast)
Until you tow with the Fit you won't know what it can do, just take it easy until you get a good feel for it, practice a few panic stops to see how things go.

The Prolites look really nice. Are they sold in the US? Does the extra height result in significant drag?

Rowerwet, what does your td weigh? How wide is it?
