Postby xe1ufo » Thu Apr 27, 2006 2:11 pm

At the moment:
--1 64-bit HP laptop, running 64-bit WindowsXP and also 64-bit Mandriva 2006 Linux.
--One desktop running WindowsXP
--One desktop running Fedora Core 4
--One handheld Sharp Zaurus SL5500 running Linux
--One Handheld Hewlett Packard Jornada 690, running Windows CE 2.11
--One handheld Nec MobilePro 790, running Windows CE 2.11
--One handheld Hewlett Packard Jornada 564, running PocketPC 2002
--One Psion 5MX handheld computer, running Epoc operating system
--One Apple Newton MessagePad 2000 handheld computer

Hmmmm
I think I have an adiction to very portable computing, with built-in keyboards!

Boy, now THAT brought back some memories! My first computer:
A Commodore Vic 20, with a whopping 4-Kilobyte (that is not a misprint!) memory, and with a cassette tape unit for storage. And it hooks up to the TV for a monitor! And yes, I still have it. I had some ham radio software for it.

And I thought my wife and I each having our own PC was plenty!!! I'm amazed by the number of PCs some of you have.

My PC is one that I built from scratch. My first was a TRS-80, then I had a Compac "luggable". It looked like a sewing machine case and the front cover came off and was the keyboard. It had two floppy drives, no hard drive. My first real PC was a Dell 386, with 4 meg of ram, 150 meg hardrive. When I began overloading it, I tentativley replaced the hard drive with a larger one, then added more memory, then swapped the MB and 486 processor, added a CD player, and before long, I had to put it all in a tower case. By then, it was an entirely different computer. With that experience, I built one from scratch, and later, built another, and then the one I have now. The last two have a MB with dual IDE controllers, so I can have up to 8 IDE devices, like the 3 hard drives, CD, and DVD that I have, and space for 3 more. I also installed a network router for out PCs to use the same cable connection and share files.

There will be no PC in our TTT. I don't care for laptops at all.

Sometimes I pretend to be normal. But, that gets boring...so I go back to being me.

Wow, I thought we had a lot of computers. I don't feel so weird since we only have 4 laptops and one desktop. The desktop was the last computer I built from scratch. Got sick of dealing with windows and misc. parts/driver issues so now all our newer computers are laptops and I don't mess with 'em. But, I'm thinking it might be fun to experiment with linux someday.... :?

Sorry to revive this old thread, I found it funny to me. I found this forum via a bunch of loons (my "digital friends", as I call 'em) I chat with from another DIY forum (www.arcadecontrols.com)

I currently have 14 working computers (six in use around the house, 3 in machines of the type commonly built at that forum, the rest just waiting to be put in, coach!), and another 9 non-working ones awaiting fixing from "organ donor" PC's - another 6 of those.

Grand total - 29 computers. Yeah, I'm a bit of a computer dork

Here's the funny part. Over at that other forum, I'm not even close to the record holder, and there's at least a dozen who have more than I do!
