After the snow,
Image

they are calling for this...

Jan 4-6th, 2014 Winter Storm

Snowfall will continue along a frontal boundary today as it expands to cover all of Southeast Michigan. Low pressure will track northeast along this front and bring heavy snowfall from mid afternoon into this evening. Total snowfall accumulations of 6 to 12 inches can be expected by late this evening.

An Arctic airmass will then expand into the area in the wake of this storm system and lead to the coldest temperatures Southeast Michigan has experienced in about 20 years. Wind chill values could be as cold as -40.

Our temps are supposed to plummet starting around 3AM. How cold is it supposed to be down there Verna?

Mike, that's about the same as here. They have issued a blizzard warning for northern Indiana, but not for central Indiana. Wind chills -45 to -50. Pretty scary. I know how to dress for it, but baby, that's cold!!!!

Yep, that's cold and that's scary.

We have sweatshirts for the dogs, and they'll be wearing them tomorrow. We'll be mostly hibernating tomorrow!

If your in an area that does not normally get to these temps, leave a trickle on water taps, especially if plumbing is on exterior wall.
If you have to go outside, dress in layers and make sure bare skin is covered.
And if you have to go out, take it easy, really easy to overwork yourself in those temps, little harder to breath.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

No skis. Snow shoes for me.

Thanks for the advice. All 3 sinks are dripping water. Cabinets are open . There was just a news flash that we might not get power back for 48 hrs..... Oops. It should be around freezing by then. Yes, the layer thing works well. I was too warm today when I was helping s neighbor by cutting his downed tree so he could get out of his driveway.

Havn't had to deal with a power out since I moved out west, back home in Ontario, quite regular in winter.
One other thing, if you have municipal water and an older gas water heater, you probably still have hot water......fill the tub with hot water as a heat source, pots filled with hot water near windows, and hot water bottles rock
I Always survived quite well with coleman stove, batteries from trailer and a couple 12 volt lights.
Also black cat heaters, in the volume of air in a house the black cats never concerned me, i'll set them on a cookie sheet, tin foil, some spare ceramic tiles from a reno, anything to provide a non combustable surface to sit it on , crack a window, seal off unneeded rooms with blankets or close their doors, heated living space to a minimum.

One thing that amazed me back that summer when the whole eastern seaboard went down was how many people I talked to later that didn't remember they had a BBQ to cook on...... and often with a sideburner that they could boil water on......Panic brings out the stupid
Being a camper type, I always have stuff that " NORMAL " people don't, much easier to ride out the storm, it becomes a minor inconvenience.,
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is
