Teardrop/CNC Business Suggestion

Postby angib » Thu Jan 09, 2014 5:42 pm

It seems to me that making a curved template is a stumbling block for many potential teardrop builders. Even just using big radii is a problem. It would be nice if builders could buy a template - but I guess the shipping costs (and the likelihood of in-transit damage) would kill that idea. But what if the template could be disassembled for shipping?

Here is my suggestion for a Cub/Modernaire template (and at 10ft long that's one of the bigger teardrops):

This could be cut from, say, 1/4" MDF with all the parts coming out of one 4x8 sheet. There is even enough left over to get a 18"x48" backer board to which the other parts could be strapped to give them some protection during shipping.

I've shown this as being cut from a 4x8 sheet but presumably this could be cut into smaller pieces so that a home-sized CNC router could be used.

It's tempting to say this could be the inner frame of a sandwich or cookie-cutter wall, but then you need two of everything and the design of the template becomes mighty complex, to stop the jigsaw piece joints from clashing with other things.

How many builders would have a pretty Grumman, if only it were easier to get the shape?

I like it Andrew... I've been thinking about similar things recently... But yea, you nailed it head on!

Mike...

Andrew and Mike
I'll have a 48" x 96" CNC router running in a few weeks (waiting on a backorded cable) and would be happy to do something like this for you if you wanted to build something.

In fact, this little beauty will be one of the first things to come off of the CNC as soon as it's running.
