TDs in and around Portland, Oregon?

Postby telemorris » Tue Jan 14, 2014 12:51 pm

Hi,

I'm researching designs and figuring out construction details. Much to digest and think about for a first time build. I'm about to buy a HF trailer, probably this weekend, before the sale is over.

I'm wondering if there any TD builders in and around Portland, Oregon? I'm most interested in Cub/Modernist and Grumman profiles. I'm really interested in looking at the arrangement of the cabinets inside the sleeping compartment and access to the storage inside, especially the storage behind the "headboard" for lack of a better term.

My wife is skeptical that you can access anything in that area and is pushing for a hatch access from the outside of the front of the tear (trailer tongue end). I really don't like that idea because the front of the TD bears the brunt of weather (i.e. rain) at highway speeds. I just don't see being able to keep rain from getting forced into that front storage area with 60 mile an hour wind driven rain.

Anyone willing to let us visit this weekend?

Thanks,

Ed

Headboard cabinets are useful. Gives you a place to put all the same things you would on a bed nightstand. Watch, wallet, keys. Also for lights and plugs. Anyway, here is a picture of mine in progress.

As you can see, I put an AC unit top dead center of the headboard.

The small cabinet on the left is the tear fuse and junction box. The other two cabinets hinge from the bottom, I thought that would be better with pillow and bedding in the way of a normal cabinet swing.

Here is a picture of the outside front of my tear to give you that side of things. I did do a pass through like you mentioned, but it is for the AC unit. It is compression gasketted all the way around. Not water tested yet, but I don't think it will leak. Also, the picture shows a tongue box below on the outside.

I would offer to let you come see it in person, but Las Vegas might be a little far out of your way...

This guy is really in for it then......

Actually the vacuum created by the trailer passing thru the wind sucks the rain into the rear mounted galley hence the need for a good seal.

We have a member of our group with a Jim Dandy and the 1 1/4 overhang created by his hatch combined with the seal keeps things high and dry.

Hey it's campin' if you are really worried about wet potty paper ect put the delicate items inside or in a plastic tote or garbage bag in the tongue box.

Ed
Before you make the mistake of rushing out and buying a HF Trailer just because they are on sale, you should do a little more homework.
HF trailers seem to be on sale all of the time ( next sale will probably be next month)
You might want to check out the For Sale section here on the Forum.
There is a project in Ellensburg Wa. that has a lot of great value if it has not already be sold???

Ed,

There are several builders around Portland. Read TOW http://www.teardroptrailers.org/newsletters/TOWLine44.pdf. Most any of them will talk.

Have fun
