what the heck is that?

Postby Bob Haven » Mon Jan 13, 2014 8:19 pm

As I mentioned in earlier posts, my girlfriend Nancy and I are new to the teardrop world- we purchased our first one from a builder in neighboring Florida-
Anyway, maybe teardrops are a rare site here in south Georgia, but I just had to share a few comments I've received as of late.
I have ours stored at Nancy's, and have been doing all the painting, etc. in her driveway, where everyone on her dead-end road has to pass by. The other day, I was doing a little painting, and a neighbor came by walking his dog. He stared for awhile, then curiosity got the best of him and he approached me, asking if I was working on an overly-large dog kennel! Today, I ran into one of her neighbors, and he asked what in the heck I was working so much on in his neighborhood- was it an emergency shelter of some sort? It's been fun explaining it to these folks, and also to others who want to drop by and see the progress. These are true conversation pieces we have. After explaining it to several neighbors, they all have some earlier camping story to tell, and they ALL want to follow the progress of our teardrop and are rooting us on to get it out and camping. Pretty cool.

The "dog kennel ?" question was asked of me, on my first (and only, so far) camping trip. I had only gone 10 miles from home, and had just filled up my truck's gas tank at a Quik Trip, and was returning from the counter with a couple of bags of ice. There was a guy looking over my trailer, looking sorta puzzled. He asked if it was a dog kennel, to which I quickly replied " yes, in a way". "How so?" I replied that it was a personal camper for me, but that since for most of my life I had been called "Mad dog" (though in recent years, have been more of a "Mild dog"), so Mister, in a way, it is a "dog" house. I got in my truck, and drove away. Leave 'em dazed and confused, I always say!

Ours looks more like a conventional trailer than most tears and we get "interesting" questions. We were camped at Harrison Lake State Park about 20 miles from home on our "maiden voyage" (close to home if something goes wrong) and there is berm that the to the west of our camp site. Some one coming in saw us sitting at the pick-nick table next to the trailer and later came over and said he first thought it was a very tall pick-nick table or a very short trailer, and he wanted a "tour". The most common comment we get is "does it go up".

while on my 2 week Christmas vacation. A guy that works for the city water and drainage department stopped by the house and asked if he could come check my build out. He stayed for a while and talked. I live on the corner of 2 rather busy streets, and receive tons of double takes.

I built mine in the backyard so only a few neighbors could see it, they were used to boat building so not many questions. At my new house I live on a busy corner, I built a large wooden swing set for my kids last summer, I had many slow drive by's and lots of comments from people walking by. Right after we moved I parked the tear in the driveway, within a week I had two offers to buy it.

And the looks on peoples faces? Candid Camera could not have done better!
So get used to it!

I purposely built my TTT with a design that nobody would be sure what it was. Aside from (possibly) the window, it could easily be mistaken for a small cargo trailer. If I decide I want to spend a night (or catch a nap) at some place that isn't a campground - maybe a rest area or a parking lot) it won't be obvious that there's someone inside.

You should see the looks and questions I get from this little tiny trailer  especially from the younger generation who never has seen or heard of a single wheel trailer......Image

It has been quite a while since I saw a single wheel trailer.

I actually considered building a single-wheel very strongly. That is, until I learned it required a special hitch which does not exist for most TV.

....Yes they do, and I would not want a very big or heavy one. Most of the single wheels that were built are in the 200-300# range and take special handling when you disconnect, I have 4 detachable jacks with casters (1 each corner) that once in the down position I can easily push and roll it to it's corner for storage. Let's put it this way...you unhook that thing without the jacks and you might as well be standing on 2x4 on edge, on top of a bowling ball with a set of bar bells over your head, because disaster is about to strike :frightened: I built this one last year, the box is all powder coated 12 ga. aluminum and is very light. These are extremely popular with the Volkswagen crowd especially the buses that are camped in for gear storage.
