Weather here has been pretty much the same for more than a week. Lows 16-23 degrees, Highs 36-43. Sunny, barely even a breeze, some times a freezing fog in the morning. No precipitation adding to the drought. I am living in an official Natural Disaster Area. Looks like it will be like this until next week. But no real precipitation.

Actually it is rather warm for us. Mostly complaining about lack of water.

I may know the coupler, 4 or 5 years ago I had to replace the coupler on my firewood, camping,, utility trailer. I had a friend(known person to do some little welding put it on). besides the rough job he did welding, it worked . there were no holes for bolts. It has hauled all known things cows, goats, pigs, furniture ,,, you name it and it has probably hauled it , it has 2x6 walls and floors. The Biggest problem: very heavy made with 1x4 steel and iron. after I got my hitch on my car I thought I would take my lawn mower to be repaired, with the lawnmower on it I couldn't get the car out of 3rd gear It was not the tongue weight but the actual pull. I will never pull that trailer with my car. I always pulled it with my truck so I never knew it was that heavy. I digress, what I wanted to say was that the coupler on that trailer has been fine. Of course it is not made for the rough treatment of a business but for my usage it has been ok. I don't know if the metal content has changed in the making of the coupler but the metal seems heavy enough. It is about the same as the coupler on my TD and we both know that's from China, So I think that if you have your bud do some spot welding on the coupler whilist he welds the chain you will be fine.

Whew, I think

I have several of those cheap ( inexpensive ) couplers. They work for the weight range. Need adjusting to fit to the ball properly. Sometimes needs adjusting after some usage. If you want a bullet proof coupler get a Bull Dog. ( that is the only brand I know of ). Nice heavy iron, no adjusting, none provided. Expensive. Probably way over kill for occasional use. We have one on a car hauling trailer at work. But that trailer needs it as we throw the book at it. And a few other things. Like carrying very heavy pickups and over some rough roads.

I was just gonna’ get one at the HF , and some safety chains too... The FS is not a high use vehicle .. as yet ...

Randy , ever since you mentioned the terrain , I see from the map , you’re on the SE rim of the old caldera :o ... and it almost looks like the Snake was pushed into that arc... I’ve driven through that part of the country and noticed how it was “scarred” ... thought that was from glaciers , but could be from something older and much more evil ... :frightened: Very interesting ... Now makes me wonder how those geological features affect your weather?

I use the coupler from HF, will probably last a good 50,000 miles so I am not worried. And the bolt holes are standard so new one will slip right on.

The mountain ranges here in Idaho use to go all the way from up North to down South with no interruption. Until the Yellowstone Hot Spot came through and blasted them to bits and melted the roots out. The last volcanic activity here happened about 2000 years ago and those flows are less than 20 miles from where I live. The legends of the local Indians indicate they saw or at knew the flow where once molten rock. Then there was the Bonneville floods.

Video is of a lot of places of my youth and today. I still get a kick out of the Watermelon sign. Use to pass it a lot.

Never know where a thread will go. Do we?

Oh, almost forgot this.

Teton Dam Flood

I remember that day very well. While I lived well down stream and did not worry I would be directly flooded stayed glued to the tube and radio that day. Many relatives lived in the path and on the edge. Several years later I had a long visit with an engineer that worked on the dam construction. He said they joked about building a block house down stream and putting cameras inside so they could see what it looks like with a dam fails. Do not know if they was just joking like that on all the dams they built or did they know something about this one?
Thats the truth.

Thanks for posting about the Bonneville Flood, Randy. That was interesting.

Seems to me that us foamies do tend to wander around in a thread a little more than most folks, but I like it that way!

I think a person can learn a lot when they wander about. I have long said that when a person gets to a new town the best way to find out where things are is to get lost for a while.

Randy, WOW!!! I must admit that until I saw that video I was just not interested in seeing anything in Idaho, I had not even thought of the state except for potatoes, and couple of tttt members. I guess I really got an education from your link now I am excited to see Idaho and some points of interest. I had forgotten about Evil Knevils jump and the falls and the interesting things along the snake river. Now I will have to research and learn more about your state and the interesting things I might get to see. I see that this year is going to be filled with lots of new and interesting things to learn about the states I will get to travel through. So I will put several new things on my bucket list. Thank you so much for posting the links. I hope to get to see you in my Big Out West trip. I will be starting a Thread in the fall on " what to see in my state" I hope you will put in that Link to explaning the wonderful things to see.

Now GPW I would have the coupler spot welded if you can..
