My cabinet door prototype

Postby cracker39 » Sun Apr 30, 2006 8:35 am

Although I've used routers for nearly 20 years, I have not had the need to make a cabinet door until now, and this is my first attempt at it. This is a protype that I made for my galley cabinet. I have a bag of hinges to use that I picked up at a yard sale years ago, but they all are to inset the door 3/8" inside the frame, and I didn't inset the middle shelf frame, so I have to make 4 smaller doors rather than 2 large ones. I put an oak ply panel in the prototype, but thought about buying a sheet of 14" birch so that the color is all nearly the same. But, the contrast with the oak isn't bad either and my wife likes it, so i'll probably use the oak that I have.

The door frame pieces are butt-joined with pocket hole screws, as my mitering attempt wasn't so hot. It is hard to see it, but the outside face edge has a 5/16" roundover. The in side face edge was done with a 5/16" cove molding bit after the door frame was constructed. The inside outer edges are dadoed 3/8" by 3/8" to fit inside the door frame, and the panel is inset 3/8" from the face of the door.

I like the contrast of the 2 woods.

I find that sometimes if you use the same wood throught a project (I used pine T&G for my ceiling and walls in my den), and it looks bland. So I'm going to stain the walls a light color...

It's like when you go into some log cabins, it's just too much of the same thing..

Thanks for the nice comments. My paneling and ceilijng are a very light color, called "Kimberly Rustic Oak", and is lighter than my cabinet framing, although I don't see anything rustic about it. So, my cabinet and door frames are a little darker than the paneling and the inset panel in the door will be the 3rd color, and darker than the others. I like some contrast too. I'll do all the molding in the same color as the cabinet frames.

Dale,

Looks good! I always had trouble building doors until the last couple of years. Using a router makes it a lot easier.

I'll be using my router/table as well. I have The Router Worksop table and jigs, including the RAISED PANEL SYSTEM

I'm hoping when I do get started to make something similiar to this for my doors; sample was done with ProDoor software from The Router Workshop as well.
