Hello from Pennsylvania

Postby lfhoward » Sat Jan 25, 2014 2:55 pm

Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd post to introduce myself to the forum. I'm a forest ecologist who spends the year teaching at a university and the summer camping and conducting fieldwork measuring trees! My wife and I were in the field for 8 weeks last summer, camping in a tent at state parks. I love the camping experience, but sleeping on the ground and making sure the tent doesn't leak during the frequent heavy downpours is beginning to wear on us. I'm hoping to either acquire a good, inexpensive teardrop or build my own before the field season begins again in late May, and this forum seems like the place to be!

So far I think I'm partial to the Benroy style, and am very glad to see there are free plans for one on this site. I'm also interested in making my trailer offroad-capable, as my lifted Jeep would be the tow vehicle. If there are any build threads you think I should check out for ideas, please let me know!

Glad to be on board. See you around the forum,
Lauren

Welcome! I built the Generic Benroy and tow it with my Jeep Liberty. I didn't do an off-road capable build like you plan. Have fun with the build. I look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks everyone! I'm currently doing some research to figure out what kind of trailer I want. Doing a lot of reading on here. There are some beautiful curvaceous tears on here like the "Atma Travelear", but then again there are sweet boxy rigs like "The Dog House" that are angular and tough. I like both! But having a Jeep, angular might just win out over aerodynamic. I'm also curious about cargo trailer conversions, and am undecided about buying vs. building. Lots of thinking to do! I know I eventually want a high clearance trailer with a track and wheels that match my tow rig.

Quick question: Is there a thread with a graphic that shows silhouettes of the different trailer designs? I'm getting to know Benroys, Standies, Grasshoppers, Ken-skills, Lil Diners, Canned Hams, Foamies, and the like (there are many more!), but I haven't seen any resource that put them all side by side for comparison. I'm betting a graphic like this exists somewhere. Or flash cards, like they used to ID airplanes in WWII?

Thanks!
Lauren
