On one of my family's cross country summer trips back in the day we stopped somewhere in Minnesota to visit with relatives. I noticed that they, and most other cars in the area had a big tall fiberglass whip attached to their bumper with a bright day-glow orange pendant at the top; must have been ten feet high. When I asked what that was all about the answer was so that they could see other cars coming in the winter. Being a youngster at the time, having been from SoCal originally, and living on the relatively warm coast in CT where a bad storm is only a couple of feet of the white stuff, it kind of stuck in my mind.

We was considering that.

Next summer if we get some high humidity here you all can laugh at me. Here high humidity is 75%

Yesterday I shoveled the 1/2" of sleet from the driveway in preparation for the 6-10" of snow forecast for all day tomorrow. They say we may get periods of 1-2" snowfall per hour. I have to run my wife to Kansas City (about 40 miles away) for a medical appointment. We are hoping to have the appointment taken care of and be headed back home before the heavy stuff starts. Then a quick run to the grocery store (only a few blocks away) before I fire up the snow blower to clean out at least the first round. There should be more snow in a couple of more days. Oh, and between snow storms, single digit temps with double digit below wind chills. Somebody shoot that groundhog for me.

That sounds like our forecast. I think I've seen the ground for about 5 days since the beginning of December. Winter fatigue is what the newscasters are calling it. I resemble that!

At this point I am looking forward to the 4 to 6" of snow as the driveway is about a 1/2" of solid ice!

Send some wet weather here please. They are talking about shutting down water right holders junior to 1974. I will still get my water but a lot of growers, towns and homes might be dry. Could also hurt my income.

This is a very unusual year. Here in SE Michigan I can't remember every having this much snow. I'm tired of it. My drive to work takes longer, sometimes much longer. I have to snowblow all the time. I also have to snowblow paths in the yard for the doggies so they have a place to go. I even have to snowblow the sidewalks in the neighborhood so that the doggies and I can go for a walk.

I'll have to go out and take some pictures... But meanwhile, this is what it feels like...

Mike, the snow last night is taller than my dog, Sunny Day. She was almost smothered by the snow when she thought she would jump off the sidewalk! Only her head was showing.

I blew about 5" out of the driveway, then did a couple of my older neighbors' drives. Then I went half way around the block to get to the sidewalk on the back side of my fence (city ordinance requires that I clear it). By the time I got back around to my drive, there was another 2" that I cleared. Got up this morning and almost couldn't tell I had done anything. about 12" total with drifts up to my knees.

Oy, ouch.

We only had 4 or 5 inches but there was a slush layer under and a wet sleet layer on top. Heavy dense stuff, though it wasn't so bad and didn't clog the blower too badly. The worst is the narrow slot between my truck and the boat, my blower route from the garage to the top of the drive where the heavy burden on the boat cover slides off forming a bigger pile.

Work had a late start, so I slept in and just drove out when the time came. When I got home to clear the drive the plow hadn't come around yet to do the final push back. Fortunately I had parked at the curb while I was running the blower to clear the top of the drive, so when the plow showed up he skirted around and didn't flop a big pile back at me.
