First trip camping with the wife

Postby LWW » Mon Feb 10, 2014 4:00 pm

My wife is retiring first week in March. She is a city girl and although I have camped quite a bit in my past years this will be her first so I'm going to take her to Myrtle Beach for a test to see if she can handle it. If we are successful at this trip we'll be planning a trip out west starting in Madison Wisconsin 1st week of October after our week long Bassett Hound Nationals dog show. Yeah can you say 3 hounds and us.

Anyway I have to get through the Myrtle Beach leg first. Neither she nor I will be cooking this trip so I see lots of eating out for dinner. Any suggestons for camp grounds in Myrtle Beach, any to stay away from. I want this to be good for her as the trip out west will be a long one with stops in CO TX NM LA FL AZ NV to see sights and friends. I haven't been to Myrtle Beach in 35 years so it will all be new to me.

Any thoughts and recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks Larry

We have been exploring the state parks of South Carolina and they are very nice. There are two in the Myrtle Beach area that you might want to check out: Huntington Beach and Myrtle Beach State Parks. We have taken our "Super Bee" to several state parks in the mountains and Hunting Island on the coast and have had a great experience every time. Lots of clean bath houses, camp store, and other amenities at all parks. Huntington Beach is on our short list of places to go this spring, mainly because of the nearby Brookgreen Gardens. There are lots of things to see and do in the area and you won't be far from fabulous seafood at either location. The State Park System has a very easy online registration and they offer discounts to seniors. Check them out at: http://www.southcarolinaparks.com

You might want to hit a local state park for a quick trip close to home as a trial run instead of committing to Myrtle right off the bat, if things go poorly she can always go home for the night.

Why won't you be cooking at the camp sites?

I've been looking at the state park sites in SC, Myrtle Beach, and they look interesting. My wife likes the beach although she hasn't been in years so a little sand between her toes should do her good.

As for the cooking, we both like to eat out but not at the chain places. We much prefer the local home town diners. I still remember the restaurant we ate breakfast at in Plainville Ma last October, it was to kill for, A J s restaurant. I guess I'm going to have to learn some outdoor cooking skills but for this first trip it'll be eat out.

If I were going to give her an easy out I'd use the back yard, but I think she'll get it. She wants to make this trip out West this coming October and I think she knows this is the best way to do it. I'll take a couple of short trips this summer with her and the Weekender and let her get use to it. I'll take little steps first then the big jump. Larry
