'63 Shasta Astrodome "Lucy Blue"

Postby 2bits » Mon Feb 24, 2014 10:20 am

Hi all,

I picked up this project on New years day and even though it looked hideous, I could see lots of potential in it especially with the original cabinets and bathroom in tact and in good shape. The undercarriage looks absolutely new which amazed me. This past weekend I got it painted and it turned out great! I hate masking things off and I thought of a neat trick... First I spray painted the edge trim and window overhangs an alumimum color and then brushed the body paint on right over the overspray. It looks very crisp. I painted it the same color blue as my Kenskill because I could see it used to be that color underneath and also so I can keep the leftovers as touchup paint! Not to mention it just is a really nice color!

Here are some pics.

A shot of it AFTER I got back from scrubbing it down at the car wash. I got all the crud off of it and alot of the old paint too.

A pic with the trim painted. I used paint thinner to clean up any overspray off the windows.

Here are some pics after the paint job is complete. In the back, I stopped the blue color at a seam and painted the top silver as far as I could see and it looks like bare aluminum, I am so glad I did that because the colors play off of each other very well. I also painted the tongue and rear bumper a gray color and replaced the tongue jack which really cleaned up the front. Next is getting the original tail lights working, finishing out the interior and putting it up for sale.

Nice work Thomas. I had one similar to it a few years ago. Should have kept it but someone came along and offered too much mullah and it was gone. Love the colors. I too paint aluminum trim a lot . I follow several forums on vintage campers , none of which are as active a forum as this one. I would like to see and discuss more vintage units on here but maybe the vintage interest isn't here.
You have probably seen my SunshineInn....doing it totally vintage style..including vintage looking aluminum and birch interior.

hmm looks real familiar. 77111 I keep planing to do something with it but keep working on my own stuff. A relative uses it for storage.

I have seen 3 fixed up but non had the iron work on the font. there is a lot about that trailer in the net. I see your's has the restroom. Got any shots inside?

go to google images and enter shasta astrodome non of these have that iron work but I have seen it on other trailers about the same age and wonder if they did not just move it over.
