Well I finally broke down & bought the chepo Honda generator,
Since this is OverTheTop.... I really wanted the Honda 3000 with remote auto start, but at $2300 + tax
and since I would only use it every once in a blue moon
I could not get myself to spend the money

I tested the Honda & so far here is my bitch about it......
First off the Honda did not have a quick start guide......
AND it was a PIA to find the info fast, while trying it in the rain & dark
As it was tested at the Factory it was partially 1/4 to 1/2 full with oil ( just leave all the oil )
I needed to buy 1 quart 30Wt oil & thats pretty cheap ass for Honda
2nd you need to buy a funnel for the oil ...also cheap ass from Honda
The choke has 3 settings, Choke - RUN & off , not labeled real well.
BUT - I did get a cheapie cover.
The cap has a ON - OFF gas setting - also bitch to see in the dark :x

Finally filling the Honda is a Major PIA if using the gas station pump -
you can't see what your doing & will make a mess
(must use a plastic tank to fill slowly.)
I filled mine with .975 gallon :D :D

It ran about 4 hours using 80 amps combined on my 2 Magnum chargers,
so thats about 320 AMP hours for .9 gallons of GAS

It ran quiet at around 1000 watts and the eco throttle worked great
I was able to close the door and watch TV no problem at all.

buy the extended run gas tank that holds 5-6 gallons, I bought mine off ebay for 60.00 I think, but it's great.
I can run it all weekend and you don't have to shut it off to add the gas.
I am thinking about making a metal frame around the Honda and secure it in the bed of the truck that I use to pull the trailer with so I don't have to set it up every time I use it.

Eu2000 is a great machine. Just remember that when you start it after it has been shut off for a while that you need to pull it through several times to pump the carb bowl full of fuel before it will fire. The trick is to make even steady pulls and not to try and snatch the rope out of the generator. Pulling harder and faster will not prime the fuel system faster or make it start any sooner.

You need one of these. http://www.wisesales.com/bergs-6-gal-sy ... power.html

Wise Sales and a few ebay vendors sell oil port extenders for the Honda and the Yamaha inverter generators. Plus there is a dipstick with a magnet in it. Some of the "funnel tubes" are plain smooth aluminum and others are knurled which is handiest when working with something that could be slick with oil. I'm thinking of buying one but am trying to get my son to machine one for me for free.

piperpilot3tk, Howdy;

Looks like a new job for the old outboard motor fuel tanks,
aid a squeeze bulb in the fuel line and that will 'prime' your
carb for ya.

Hank, I did not buy the "kit" I purchased an aluminum adaptor cap from Wise Sales and used an old 12 gallon deck tank for my first one week trip. After figuring out that running the generator 24/7 was only burning 5 quarts a day, I ended up switching to a 3 gallon outboard tank. When I need to refuel every few days I don't even shut off the generator, I just remove the outboard motor tank cap and use a standard 5 gallon jug to refill it.

Don, I bought the aluminum magnetic dipstick and funnel from Wise when I bought my EU2000 new from them. I do like the magnetic dipstick since the EU does not have a oil filter and during initial break-in the magnet did help retain some ferrous metal particles. The oil fill funnel extension is pretty well useless. The flared plastic lip that is built into the chassis below the dip stick port is all you need to drain the oil without making a mess, it is all about the angle in which you hold the unit while you drain the oil. When refilling the crankcase, I have used a small plastic funnel I bought from the auto parts store that works well, but it is really not needed. Most of the time I just tilt the generator over about 45 degrees and pour oil straight from the bottle, then I return the unit to a level position to check the oil fill level.

Forgot to add that the primer bulb in the boat tank hose will help prime the carb and reduce the number of pulls on the first start, but it helps most for purging the air out of the EU's internal tank. The cool thing about the EU is because it has a positive displacement vacuum driven diaphragm fuel pump, it will draw fuel from an external tank without having to have the external tank elevated like some of the other portable gensets. For this to work you must first fill the built in tank all the way full then loosen the adaptor fuel cap and gently squeeze the primer bulb until all of the air is forced out of the tank. Before I hook up the external tank and purge the air out I wrap two paper towels around the filler neck to absorb the small amount of fuel that will spill.

Good reviews. I haven't sprung for the generator yet, but if I ever want A/C, that's how I'll have to power it. Only need A/C in July and Aug., so not going there yet. Nice to know your Honda is fairly quiet though.

How to Purify Water with Sunlight

how-to-purify-drinking-water-with-sunlight.jpg
how-to-purify-drinking-water-with-sunlight.jpg (70.29 KiB) Viewed 3451 times

Did you know that solar radiation from the sun can purify (disinfect) water and make it safe for drinking from harmful bacteria?
While so often we hear or read about the bad things that the sun is capable of doing to us, we should also know that some of the same energy from the sun can be harnessed for doing good. A few good examples include solar electric panels, solar hot water panels, and solar ovens.
Well here is one more good example. Harnessing the solar energy from the sun to purify (disinfect) water from a lake or stream into safe drinking water. It is much simpler than you may think. Here’s how…

light-spectrum.jpg
light-spectrum.jpg (21.48 KiB) Viewed 3451 times

UV-A rays from the sun, (Ultraviolet-A, longwave, 315-400 nm), will terminate harmful bacteria, parasites, and viruses in water, given enough sun exposure.
A clear plastic bottle filled with water, exposed to the sun for 6 hours will make the water safe to drink (see the caveat list). In fact, the effectiveness of terminating harmful bacteria is an amazing 5-Nines, that is, 99.999 percent!
List of germs that are terminated from UV-A sunlight exposure at 6 hours
Bacteria – Escherichia coli
Bacteria – Vibrio cholera
Bacteria – Salmonella
Bacteria – Shigella flexneri
Bacteria – Campylobacter jejuni
Bacteria – Yersinia enterocolitica
Virus – Rotavirus
Parasites – Giardia
Parasites – Cryptosporidium (needs 10 hours exposure)

List of caveats to UV-A sunlight water purification
This method kills germs. If the water is already contaminated with chemicals from pollution, the chemicals will remain.
If the water is cloudy and dirty, it should be filtered first to allow the UV-A rays to effectively penetrate into the water.
The plastic water bottle should be no bigger than 2 liters. In moderately cloudy water, UV-A will lose 50 percent effectiveness at a depth of 10 mm (about 0.5 inch), whereas UV-A will only lose 25 percent effectiveness at a depth of 10 mm in clear water. Just use a typical size soda bottle or water bottle.

How to purify water with sunlight
The recommended bottle to use is a “PET” bottle. It is very common and is typically used for soda or other soft drinks.
PET, PolyEthylene Terephthalate, Recycle code #1 on bottom of bottle.

The bottle must not be colored. It must be a clear bottle. Again, it must be a clear plastic bottle. Not glass (glass blocks too much of the UV-A for this purpose).
The bottle must be clean. Common Sense.
Know your water source (as best you can)… if you believe it to be chemically toxic, don’t use it.
Fill the bottle with water. If the water is very cloudy, it must be filtered by first pouring through a cloth or such material to capture sediment.
Lay the bottle down in the sun. Do not stand them up. Ideally the bottles would by placed so that they face the the sun at a similar angle, to maximize the UV-A penetration.
Even better… lie the bottles on a reflective surface to increase the UV-A exposure using direct and reflected sunlight. This is not necessary, however it would shorten the required time and ensure optimum UV-A exposure.
If the sky is partly cloudy with only a few clouds, then 6 hours sunlight exposure will be enough. If the sky is half filled with clouds, or more, then 2 days will be required.
Note that the outdoor temperature does not matter, so long as the UV-A sunlight exposure has been 6 hours.
Camelbak All Clear UV Purifier

A few notes:
An excellent source for more information on this subject is from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Sciences and Technology.
For those that are concerned about using plastic, the WHO (World Health Organization) states that the limiting values (plasticizers) for drinking water are never exceeded when using PET bottles for this method.
Sediment or other particulate matter should be removed first by a filtering process.

A small tidbit on batteries :D :D

Insure there is adequate ventilation for the batteries so gases can dissipate while recharging and batteries can stay cooler. In other words, do NOT use sealed battery boxes, even with sealed Gel Cell (Ca/Ca) or AGM (Ca/Ca) VRLA batteries, because if there is shorted cell, a great deal of gassing could occur. Some batteries will require up to 50 "preconditioning" cycles before they will produce their rated capacity. This is because the acid needs to fully penetrate the pores of the newly formed plates. When mixing sulfuric acid and water to make electrolyte for dry charged batteries, always slowly add the acid to the water and NEVER add water to acid as it may boil violently and splatter.

9.2.10. If a battery is charged with a manual or defective charger and all the electrolyte is "boiled" out, some batteries can cause a FIRE or produce DEADLY CO (Carbon Monoxide) or other gasses.

While not fatal, each year battery explosions cause tens of thousands of eye and burn injuries from the electrolyte (battery acid) globally. According to PREVENT BLINDNESS AMERICA, nearly 6,000 motorists suffered serious eye injuries annually from working around car batteries. Should a battery explosion occur and battery electrolyte (battery acid) gets in the eyes, flush with any drinkable liquid immediately because SECONDS count, continue flushing with water for at least 15 minutes, and seek immediate medical attention. In addition, neutralize residual battery acid, by thoroughly washing the engine compartment and the back of the hood with a solution of one-pound baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) to one gallon of warm water and rinse thoroughly with water. Proper periodic preventive maintenance (please see Section 3.), working on batteries in well-ventilated areas, or using non-sealed wet "Maintenance Free" or sealed AGM (Ca/Ca) or Gel Cell (Ca/Ca) type batteries can significantly reduce the possibility of battery explosions. All lead-acid batteries require periodic maintenance.
