Smart Phone Apps (Share your favs!)

Postby RandyG » Fri Feb 28, 2014 6:23 pm

I'm always looking for a new (at least to me) and useful app to use. And since this site is full of... umm... we'll say, 'like minded but equally different folks' (in a good way of course), I bet some of ya'll have some tips and trick on your phones. Please share, the google play store has too many to go through alone.

I just found Handyman Calculator for android. It has so many useful tools for us DIYers including: wire sizes, 3-4-5 rule, heater and Air conditioning calculator, firewood btu chart and much more. I wish I had found it sooner and it's FREE!

I like the ebook reader apps: Kobo, Kindle And iBooks. I like Slacker, Tune in Radio and CBC radio. I have a speedometer application for when I'm in the US.

Smart Phone Apps (Share your favs!)

Campwhere, and Allstays are my favorite iPhone campground finders. Gas Buddy helps my budget. Maps lets me verify the Garmin is taking me on the correct roads (when in doubt). The Weather Channel showed me a large dust storm in Lubbock, TX last year. Many states have apps for their state parks. iExit tells me what is at an exit-- specific gas station/truck stop, food, etc.

Now that my kids are 12, they'll need a fishing license to go fishing. I use the Android file transfer app (any file transfer app should work) to load the PDF of the fishing license into the Kindle reader app (any reader app should work) so we will have it any time we have the phone or tablet.

Changing the subject for favorite app
geocaching is one of my favorite activities. Best app for iphone is geoshere. Basically a geocaching database from GSAK. Android platform users use a different app, which I don't know.

Geocachers can utilize a lot of misc. apps to solve puzzles such as bar code and QR readers, chemistry, signal flags, on and on and on.

Here's a couple more. Dash light let's me turn on the flashlight without unlocking my phone. Resize Me changes my photo size so I can post them on the forum.

I like these TnTTT forum applicable Android apps: Handyman Calculator, Smart Protractor, and Bubble Level all helped in the build, Google Maps helps me find the campground(s?), Torque Pro monitors my tow vehicle's health on the road, iHeartRadio and Pandora give me tunes and sports radio away from home, AccuWeather informs me about the upcoming forecast at camp, and Tapatalk lets me monitor the forum from anywhere. Widgets I use are the Assistive Light (campgrounds are dark at night) and the Alarm Clock (I am a creature of habit, even at camp). The only problem: I often had some very poor connectivity at my first campsite; no phone, no internet, nothing but nature and campers...that's ok ,too!

Pandora- music I like instead of whatever is local
The Weather Channel- the forecasting is about as accurate as anyone else (not very), but the radar maps let me watch for trouble
Kindle- I am a bibliophile. I can't sleep anymore without reading
MapQuest- Map accuracy is good and the audible turn by turn is a must in the car
SkyView Free- Love to stargaze
Poynt- Very useful for everything from restaurants to hospitals and ATMs on the road
Wikitude- THE walking app when you travel. You fire this thing up, go to "near me" and the app overlays reviews and points of interest in your field of view through the phone camera. You can look over a block of restaurants, touch one, and immediately get reviews of the food and service there.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

I love IMDb, use it all the time to check movies out for the kids. Lists all those bits you don't want them to see. Also Shazam, for identifying songs on the radio.
