This camper is available in Australia. I had a look at one at a recent show and was most impressed.

I think there is an idea here. The swing up door on the trailer shown (I think it is called awning door here in the U.S.) makes me think that with a trailer with Barn Doors, one could have a hinged slab (plywood??) that would swing up after the barn doors are open and then come back to rest on the doors if they are pointed straight back. It would be as wide as the back opening and as long as practically possible. Maybe instead of plywood, it could be a canvas on a 4 sided frame with a slight pitch to it.

So you arrive at your site, open the Barn Doors beyond the 90 degree point, swing the lid up, bring the Barn Doors back to 90 degrees and rest the lid back on the doors.
Viola, instant canopy.

I will have to pencil this out on paper to see how practical it is to do.

The difficulty I see with that and from first hand experience, most tears are too narrow to make this work well. Our galley hatch does come up and provide cover but for longer term use we have a tarp that is the width of the trailer 6" at the trailer widens out to 14' wide and is 14' long.

Agreed, my 4ft wide galley hatch is too narrow to provide any real protection from rain, especially if the wind is blowing even a little. For real rain protection I use a 12 ft X 16 ft tarp, attached to the teardrop with spring clamps and supported on a couple of tarp poles, guyed out to make it all taut and weather tight.

Here you can see my setup for four days of rain on the Washington coast in June 2013.

Shadow Catcher,
I guess I was really thinking about CT's, but I can see your point.
