You only had foot high flames when you fired up the catalytic heater? I find I need them up to my chin to get mine working good. Once they are running are pretty safe, as far as setting other things on fire. I have put wood shavings from my hand plane, less than .002 inch thick on it and they eventually char a little. Can even safely poor the fuel from a running one back into a fuel can. Just don't get them in an un vented area. CO poisoning gives a mighty big head ache. If you live. I know.
