aluminum angle as trim???

Postby jonnyo » Mon Mar 24, 2014 1:25 pm

i have skin my huge trailer. now it s time to put trims on it. I have a RV dealer in my town that sell the usual roof trim with vinyl peice that insert inside. I do not like the look of it tho.... it s 2$/ft and 50c/foot for the vinyl insert.

The big box store have nice 1X1 aluminum anodize angle. come in 8 feet long. they look really nice on my trailer. Can i simply use this as my trim? my question is, will it be watertight???

i was thinking of butyl tape 3/4 wide, then the aluminum angle over it and screw in. then using GE generation 2 silicon to run a beed all along the extremety...

hows that as a plan? i know angles dont have that lip like real trim. would this be good? any advice?

The trim, even the stuff on chemical RV is not water tight it self. The vinyl strip is just to cover the screws for looks. What makes the trim water tight is the sealant applied under the trim. Either a silicon type squeeze tube or the 3m adhesive tape is the true watertight part. The RV style is specially designed so it accommodates for the thickness of the sealant and screw or rivet heads that are not flush mounted.

The blue is sealant in this example.

Another user on the forum is trying the PVC / Vinyl window trim he found at a hardware store. very flexible and is it hold up should works well. ( sorry I can't remember the builder name. )

Aluminum angle would work great for trim. That is what I used in many places on my trailer. The 3 / 4 butyl tape between the angle and and aluminum siding provides the watertight seal. The only place I didn't use the angle iron was on the curved pieces because the angle is harder to bend. I used RV trim for the curves. Yours don't have many (or any!) curved spots, so you should be able to use angle everywhere.

You should be able to get the aluminum angle in lengths longer than the HD or Lowes 8' lengths. You will need to find a metal supplier or a sheet metal shop can get it for you. Longer lengths will have less gaps and less place for water to try and work its way in. The longer ones might be cheaper as well.

thank you guys! nop...not a single curve on my trailer so i can use angles!!!

the only issue with all the metal supplier right now is, they dont have the nice anodize angles, just the mill finish. as my skin is mill finish, i was hoping to get those anodize to make a nice contrast between the two. but yeah, 8 feet lengh isnt great and isnt cheap either.

i need to search a little more!

If you are looking for a contrast, put it all together and get a good quality automotive primer and paint. That way the trim and screws/fasteners would all be the same color.

If you don't have curved surfaces to match/copy, then aluminum angle makes a good rain deflector/drip rail over doors and/or windows. I used it for my doors, sealed to the body with PL adhesive and screws, though I used 'Lil Bears' curved pieces over my 'Lil Bears' windows.
  • 108386 sloping drip rail, forward-facing rain/wind deflector
  • 107796 hand-formed interlocking pieces to direct flow
  • 107795 second view of component fit
  • 107794 carriage bolt added to vertical piece, for adjustable door stop
2013 HHRv "squareback/squaredrop", rugged, 4x8 TTT, 2225 lbs
  • *3500 lb Dexter EZ-Lube braked axle, 3000 lb.springs, active-progressive bumpstop suspension
  • *27 x 8.5-14LT AT tires (x 3) *Weight Distribution system for single-beam tongue
  • *100% LED's & GFCI outlets, 3x fans, AM/FM/CD/Aux. *A/C & heat, Optima AGM, inverter & charger(s)
  • *extended-run, on-board, 2500w generator *Coleman dual-fuel stove & lantern, Ikea grill, vintage skillet
  • *zinc/stainless front & side racks *98"L x 6" diameter rod & reel carrier tube on roof
