Hey Rob,

I have something similar which is rated at 212 lumens... http://www.coastportland.com/px45-led-flashlight.htm

And Bruce, I have an Ultrafire which appears to be rated for 80 ~ 90 lumens... http://dx.com/p/ultrafire-wf-502b-3w-cr ... zCwsFfLLUs

Let me run downstairs and grab a comparison photo...

From left to right, Ultrafire, Coast, Defiant!!!

Image

Looking at the photo, someone appears to have the ratings wrong!

I parted with my 4-D Mag light a couple years ago, and now use a 251 Lumen Coast HP7, though after seeing your test results, I think it isn't so great.

Thanks for posting the pictures!

I have the Ultrafire Zoom:

Supposedly, it has a 1200 lumen output, I don't know as I've never compared it to a flashlight that I knew had 1200 lumens for sure. They probably fudge the specs...

CREE XM-L T6 LED Creating Smooth, Optimized Brilliant White Beam
Max Output : 1200 Lumens
Focus Adjustable for Different Applications
Powered by one 18650 Battery
Tailcap Click Switch

I can tell you that it is by far the largest beam of any flashlight I've ever seen. It's great for flushing out the werewolves and vampires on the walk back to the trailer.

IIRC, the CREE XM-L maxes out at 800-900 lumens or so, and you'll need more power then a single 18650 provides and really good heatsinking.

I had a Klarus with an XM-L, rated at 650 lumens with two CR123 lithium batteries and 550 with one 18650 battery IIRC. I ran with the 18650 and it was BRIGHT! It died though and the Chinese support wasn't helpful for warranty and I just gave up on replacing it.

Next time I'll get an American company that will honor the warranty.

Mike,

Thanks for the comparison picture!

Hey! this is a teardrop forum. Let's get back to teardrops. :FNP

Here's the LED flashlight holder I made for last summer's build. There's one near each door for when things go bump-in-the-night.
Image

It's a Techlite if you're wondering. Nothing fancy but bright and reliable. You can get a three pack for $20. I used one today on a build I'm doing for my sister. I was stapling the ceiling from inside to the roof spars and had the light shining through the 1/8" ply to mark my target.

Got any pics of DIY flashlight holders?

Bruce, does that Ultra run off of AA batteries??? They look bright enough to melt a grizzly on a dark and stormy night.

Tony,

It uses a 18650 battery, which is a rechargeable li ion. I have two batteries so I just rotate then through the charger as needed.

Bruce, thanks for your post. I got one yesterday from Amazon and based on first impression, it is going to be perfect for me, especially during hunting season when I hit the woods at 5 AM. $12.84.

Good lead.

I was in Menards a couple weeks ago. They had a 3 pack of something that looked very similar. And they were way up on the lumens scale! And only $19

Be very careful to put the batteries in the charger the right way or it will begin to glow and smoke. Don't ask me how I know this...

I did, but I pulled the batteries within 2 seconds. The charger still seems to work but it took all day and night to charge the batteries the first time.

I don't trust it and will throw it out when the others I ordered arrive. My wife and friends were so impressed they each want several so I've ordered a bunch more including another one for myself. Hard to beat for the money...

Yes it is.
My friend ordered one for hunting after seeing it. He said when he tested it, he left it on for 5-7 hours I believe which is more then enough to make it to his stand.
My son is going to order one and I, will add one more to my collection. Sure beats those HF $3.99 ones (most of the time they are free)'

I found it interesting that there is a whole forum dedicated to flashlights: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/forum.php
Everything (and more) that you ever wanted to know about the humble flashlight.
