securing fridge ideas

Postby Crabapple » Sat Apr 05, 2014 1:38 pm

just bought this little fridge/freezer for my Prolite Suite trailer...
http://www.northernfridge.ca/collection ... ge-freezer

for those of you that have similar (ARB, Engel) how are you securing them so they don't slide around or tip over while on the road?
obvious ones that come to mine are add anchor points to a wall and strap down, or put a small rail on outboard sides on floor. both these
involve drilling/screwing into the trailer so looking for other ideas that don't involve that. maybe a fullsize piece of non-slip matting?

Interested in the replies. I was planning on using elastic bungie cord.

My Engel is going to live in back of SantaFe too.
We found that fridge/cooler is much easier to use/get to when in the back of TV in actual use during our trip last summer. Didn't have the Engel then but similar size KoolaTron.

I added power from my Suite to run to TV with a relay so that fridge would run off TV when engine is running and off Suite Batteries when not.
In theory and during testing it all works well. Anxious to try it out for real as soon as weather improves a bit.

Our Waeco rides in the back of the Subaru and there is a 10 ga line with a Anderson Power Pole connector running to the battery (there is a fuse).

Heinz, did you do that via the existing TV>trailer wiring or a separate circuit. Saw that on your website but there wasn't a lot of detail
Ps I got the same Koolatron with my trailer, worth keeping for anything or should I put it on Kijiji? This one is brand new, never used afaik.

Been meaning to write it up better, but....

The short version:
I ran a pair of #10 direct from trailer battery (via fuse) to tongue. Actually not direct from battery but rather via Solar controller Load terminals to make it easy to turn fridge off from trailer. I used the heavy Anderson? connectors. I hardwired another length from TV/Fridge to under rear bumper. This one also goes to vehicle battery and is auto-switched via a relay. From trailer tongue to TV bumper end I use about a 10ft #10 extension in case the trailer is not on the hitch. I also buried a fixed 110 volt line to bumper so that I can plug an extension cord in when 110 is available.

As a safeguard against hurting fridge and/or battery I installed a 12V dropout at the fridge end. I have it set to about 11.7, I think :)

Originally I was going to use the center pin of the trailer connector as I found that mine was not used but decided against that and used a dedicated #10 pair.

Koolatron: tried to sell mine, no bites. Maybe this spring :)

My plan is to have a chest type fridge/freezer on a pull out drawer in the galley. Probably will install D-rings in the front and back of the drawer so I can secure the fridge/freezer to the drawer with hold down straps secured between the handles of the fridge/freezer and the D-rings.

I want an ARB 37 fridge/freezer. ARB 10800352 Fridge Freezer - 37 Quart. But its more likely I will purchase a TruckFridge TF41 truckfridge.com/tf41 to save money.

I plan to use shore power, solar power, and power from the tow vehicle to run the fridge and/or charge the battery in the tear drop. Will use a 7 pin connector wire Conntek ROJ Black 7 Way Plug Inline Trailer Cord to the Tow Vehicle.

We have a Koolatron and love it!
I welded tabs in the floor to stop it from moving right or left (they are slightly angled so that they guide the fridge in as it is set into the galley).
The floor has two square tube ribs across it that do not allow the Fridge to move forward or back. Sits in the back of Miss Piggy just fine and never moves.
Easy to remove to clean or use on the table, ground or anywhere within reach of its' 12v receptacle.
We find it easier to pull over, walk to the back, and open the trunk lid on "MP" to get what we need (usually an icy cold beverage from the wet cooler that sits beside the fridge) than it is to get things out of the back of our SantaFe (as it is usually over packed :? )
We to have a 10 gauge wire built into our trailer plug that allows our fried to run while travelling as well as charging the TD Battery.
There are pictures in my Album .....just click and view. Just hit "next" to go back about 5 or 6 pages.

PS
Heinz are you ready for camping?
Are you going to the Dam?
We could do some Santa Fe racing on the way down!

Ready, but going to wait a bit longer as first trip will probably be Edmonton way.

No Dam this year :(

When are you planning Edmonton trip? Talked to my cousin there yesterday and they still have "SNOW". :(
Will you be back in time for the Gorge?
We plan to cross over to your side of the mountain and travel down to the Gorge via MT Rainier.

Snow is reason for waiting. No plans for any gatherings just yet. If you're in the neighbourhood going to Gorge, stop in.

Trying to make first trip a pleasant "shakedown" cruise to confirm all the tinkering was worthwhile. Would make future tinkering easier to digest :)
Change from KoolaTron to Engel was a big part of my "tinkering" and am hoping it will prove worthwhile. We had to supplement the KoolaTron with a lot of bought ice as I didn't have enough juice available when camped.

I know you said you didn't want to use tie downs but that's how I did mine.
