New guy from Peoria,IL

Postby MMOLLECK » Mon Apr 07, 2014 9:02 am

Hey all, I found this site just the other day and thought it looked great! So sent off the registration email and here I am. I just bought last week, a 2014 7x12 Stealth Black Hawk enclosed trailer, which I had planned out to make into a toy hauler. I really thought I was smart and doing something revolutionary,….until I found hundreds of people on here doing the same  Little back story on myself and the trailer. Im a 31 single guy, I have a great dog, cool truck (just got done building it), garage that I wish was larger, a 6x6 Max ATV (amphibious) and now the trailer. Im all about thinking up plans to build things. After work, I usually spend time out in my garage staring at the truck and ATV, thinking what I could make or build. Truck recently got a 3.5 inch lift, larger tires, custom hood, new wheels….okay ran out of things to do to it. ATV….got a bilge pump, custom bumper, winch, built a snow plow for it…dang…really don't know what else I could make for it now too  Now comes the trailer, found it last week on craigslist and couldn't believe the deal. Was listed as a 2013 6x12 for half the cost of new. From looking at the pictures I knew better….a 6x12 isn't a tandem axle. Called the bank, got the money and was up there (2 hours from me) the very next afternoon. Walked around it, and is in ALMOST perfect shape! (i say almost because a harley fell over in it and put a hole in the wall). Prior to going up there, thru email, I asked what size ball it took, how high the interior height was, and whether it was steal or aluminum frame, all questions were returned by, "Im not sure" So I was skeptical going up there, but thought I mine as well check it out, its only 2 hours if its garbage. Couldn't believe it! I didn't even try to talk her down or anything, I just handed her the cash (made her count it) and she signed over the title. I was smiling all the way home! I stopped at a truck stop for lunch, and looked at the title. Title says its a 2014, titled 7/31/2013….Thing isn't even a year old!!!! Talk about a deal! Best money Ive ever spent! So my plans for it, which I will post in the appropriate thread, are tow RV windows, Powered roof vent, insulating walls, 3ft tall cabinet/counter in the nose, and 12V wired. Shouldn't be a very extensive build, but just want to get all the essentials mentioned done, then from there I can accessorize as need be.

Hey cool, glad to see another peoria guy here! Just looked at your build, very impressive. I haven't done hardly ANY research at all on tear drop trailers, let alone foam tear drop trailers. I have to admit, I laughed when I read it, but after seeing the work you have done on it, using foam makes perfect sense! Really looking forward to seeing how that turns out!

Everybody I've told about it has not known what to think of me building it out of foam, except the people here that know about the foamies already or have built one themselves. It's an interesting concept for sure, and it's worked out quite well (for both me and others). Like most TDs, it's just a comfortable, warm (or cool), and dry place to sleep, as well as an outdoor galley area. Unlike the cargo trailers, you cannot stand up or do anything else inside really but sleep (or other activities done in bed ;) ). You're welcome to come over and see it in person sometime if you'd like.

Are you planning on having a combined toy hauler and camper?

Yea I might have to swing by and take a look at that. The foam would be great just for the insulation factor. I would think it would keep it cool when need be and warm when need be.

Yup I'm wanting to make it more into a toyhauler. Cabinets up front, 12v battery power, no sink or anything (at least that's the thought for now) I'm good in a tent, so this will just be a hard sided tent, with storage and a stereo. I will though install windows and roof vent for ventilation and have been thinking of buying a portable AC unit and possibly a harbor freight generator. Going portable so it can be used in the garage as well. Over all, I want a mobile garage for my ATV, but a place to put a blow up mattress at night.

Here's a pic of my ATV. it's just about 5 ft wide, and 7ft long. So in a 7x12, it takes up quite a bit of room. That's why I am mainly trying to confine everything to the front of the trailer to leave plenty of room for the ATV

Thanks! I love that thing! A lot of people think they aren't capable because of the no suspension and no ground clearance, but it will go places most ATV's can't. It's a ton of fun to drive
