Welcome John, I know you will find a lot of people on here who have different opinions of brakes, there is the poor guy who can barely afford the trailer who has no brakes then there is the rich guy who swears everyone should have them . and everyone in between. I have driven with 92,000 pounds behind me to a wagon weighing 400 pounds. I'v pulled horse trailer and trash trailer, and a boat trailer. What I have decided is" it is mostly how you drive and the speed you drive at. if you follow too close and you think that the person going 50 in a 55 is worth cussing at then you need brakes period, but if you have a sign on the back of your TD that says You can pass because I am going camping. No hurry and you want to stay relaxed....you probably wont ever need brakes on that trailer. So There are lots of arguments either way. If you can afford to put brakes on then by all means do so. I could not afford them, I didn't, but I drive very carefully, and I do have some experience towing.
