Wid turbines worth the trouble?

Postby pyro22487 » Tue Apr 15, 2014 5:27 pm

So I'm building a couple of wind turbines. I think max out put of each will be around 125 watts. Obviously I want to charge 1-2 batteries but I want an AC unit that can cool my tiny trailer but not deplete the batteries in 10 minutes. So any ideas on a small AC unit would be nice as well.

These put out plenty of power for TD.

Oh you're the funny one. Got it. I'm looking to build something a little less bulky. I have most of the stuff and will post videos and pics when it's up and running.

There have been those here that have done it but not much information that it was wildly successful in contrast to solar. You might do a search here and see what you find. There have been a few times when I thought it might be nice in locations with sustained winds, but the level of complication, having to set up and take down, supporting one in high wind (when they actually work well)... If you do decide to do one I will be interested in the outcome.

There are instructions for a small one capable of charging batteries on instructables

Well the turbine I am building will supply around 150-200 watts of power and the blades will be around 30" long so in all the turbine area will be around 5 feet 4 inches.

And it will weigh how much? And require a mast how high?

Maybe you can just buy a wind turbine like used on a small boat. The Rutland 913 Marine Wind Turbine puts out 250W. Here's an article comparing wind and solar.

Not to be a "Gloomy Gus" but I think more thought is in order.

Here is a pretty good site: http://www.windbluepower.com/Lite_Breez ... ow-kit.htm

To get the kind of power with a rotor the diameter yer talking about yer gonna need over twenty knots of wind! Camping in that kind of wind isn't gonna be a lot of fun IMHO and depending upon where you camp that kind of wind may be a rare experience.

Lots of folks have talked about air conditioning their trailer with batteries and an inverter but no one, to my knowledge, has done it. The battery bank would be substantial and even a small window shaker will require about 10 amps of 120 volt juice which is about 100 amps at 12 volt and will require a massive battery bank and charging system.

Solar power is easier, cheaper, and less hassle. The only practical ways to run an air conditioner, IMHO, are off of shore power or a generator.

Cheers,

Gus

Thanks for the input guys. I am probably going to build solar cells too. I am a Kiter and usually the areas I camp in are blowing 15-20 mph about 15knots. I know it will also take a lot of wid to get that 250 watts but I'm really jus hoping to cover my battery usage for the peak heat hours of the day.

Also the mast depending on location maybe 5-10 feet now some remote areas are going to need a 15-20 foot mast but I'm only building a 10 footer for now. The places that I camp literarily have nothing for miles. No rocks no trees nothing just playa.

The 2nd most common place you will find me is probably on some Texas beach again nice winds no obstructions. I want a solar cell too though the power controller I am fusing difficult though. I have designs and all it is just confusing. Luckily I have a friend that's big on alternate energy supplies and is willing to help in this endeavor.

I'll post pics of everything during construction. Like I did with my teardrop which can be found in the newbie section under just a Kiter from Oklahoma.

I haven't done it, but I found this site instructive:
