Paint Gloss and Cleaning (on canvas)

Postby jseyfert3 » Fri Apr 11, 2014 4:07 pm

Hey all, I need to paint my TD here soon. I was curious as to if the gloss level mattered for cleaning purposes. I know for house paint, you want higher gloss in areas that will need to be cleaned often, as flatter paints do not clean very well. I assumed it was the same for the trailers, but painting gloss paint on canvas seems kinda backwards at the same time.

What do most people use to paint canvas? Semi-gloss?

my final coats were glossy paint mostly so dirt would wash off easier, seems to work well.

I used "flat" and figured, I would repaint if it became necessary, or if I got tired of the color.

I firmly straddled the fence and used semi-gloss for ours....

Paint to cover a stain is quick and easy, and really blends in to the old paint. I have touched up a few spots, and can't tell... (or remember, but that's a different story) where I touched up.

Bottom line here , whatever finish you like , is to use some GOOD paint ... You don’t need that much , and it will hold up much better than cheap paint ... (ask me how I know  )

What is a good brand of paint? I have Home Depot, Menard's, Lowe's, Walmart, Sherwin William's, so I could probably get any recommended brand.

for fastest drying least headache's afterwards I use Glidden porch paint, but that is based on my boat building. I've had many paint failures with Behr porch paint even after the paint should have been dry (the paint came off in sheets :x , even inside the boat)
Glidden paint dries quickly and I can go boating the next day.

On my first TD , I used paint from Wal Mart ... Cheap paint , and it’s held up for 3 years (outside) but has dulled ... The paint I used on the FoamStream was PPG paint mixed at a Paint store that I’ve used for many years now . Paint that lasted 14 years on my house , before dulling ... That’s Good paint !!! ;) But it was almost 3 times the price of the cheap WM paint ... It also covers MUCH better , (higher pigment content) so ended up easier to apply . It really doesn’t take much paint to paint a trailer (compared to my house) so the better more expensive paint works out cheaper than the cheap paint (in the long run) ...

I always check out all the primary paint stores and ask if they will have a sale. Most of the Paint store Paints will put their paint on sale in the spring..........cheap anything is just what you get . look for the premier paints going on sale.

my 2 cents.

Thanks guys, I ended up getting Behr Exterior Latex Semi-Gloss Ultra Bright Paint. That or the Glidden exterior paint, both got good reviews in Consumer Reports from what I read, after Sherwin Williams Duration, but the duration was $60 a gallon. :o

Mary, thanks for the tip, but unfortunately I had to get the paint before you posted. :)
