Dear Chuck,
I find that the tongue length is much more about width of the tow vehicle than about how "long it should be" Even your post suggests that clearing the tow vehicle is the determining factor. Myself, I have a 5' wide tear towed by a Honda CR-V. The spare is mounted on the tailgate which necessitates at tongue length a little more than you suggest.
Why is an long tongue better?
The tongue length is a critical component for trailer stability. The longer the tongue, the easier it is for the towing vehicle to steer the trailer. It's OK to have a trailer tongue about 12" to 18" longer than most utility trailers on the road today. Shorter tongues require 12 to 15% of the trailer weight to be on the ball. Longer tongues only need 10%! That means less weight on your car and more on the trailer. Longer tongues also make for easier backing. There's also enough room to mount more stuff. Longer tongues are slightly more expensive to implement, that's the main factor driving shorter tongues on commercially built trailers.
