Not Exactly A New Member, But This Is My First Post

Hey, Ya'll!

My name is Glenn, and I hail from Colorado.

Joined this forum back in November, so that's why I say I'm "not exactly a new member". Finally had some time over the last few days to do some diggin' on this forum...

HOLY COW!

You might say I'm just a wee bit overwhelmed with this place (especially the BIG thread).

Anyway, I was first fascinated by teardrops when I spotted one while railfanning in Arizona seven years ago. Really caught my eye as my accommodation on that trip was the Presidential suite at the Hotel Saturn (slept in my car). This was mainly because I didn't want to bother setting up/taking down a tent. Had all kinds of crazy ideas for a small travel trailer, never got around to actually starting on any of them- work and real life had a way of gumming up the works. Also, couldn't seem to find the right time/money balance.

Having just come back from a road trip through Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California (just barely), and New Mexico, I decided it was time to revisit my plans. This time, accommodations were at Chez Malibu (surprisingly, more room than I first thought).

So... Looking at my first build, probably a small foamie. Probably something slightly unusual. I did see a picture of someone's teardrop that looked like an old miner's shack (corrugated metal roof, weathered wood sides). Has anyone else come up with unusual or "novelty" designs that might be doable? Say like a Japanese sleeping tube on a trailer (was up waaay too late when I brainstormed that one!)? Small railroad caboose? I did see pics of the Rocketear, that was well-executed!

Thanks for the time, glad to have found this place!

Welcome Glen , Take a look at the Tiny houses on wheels and check out Bobs caboose and all the other designs. I am building Grits just a plain foamie. but I am having a blast. I can say I am really slow but I am making progress now the weather has warmed up!!! Take your time in deciding what you want and need, and your purpose for building, and where you will be camping. consider it all perhaps you can make decisions that will suit your needs before you got it almost built and then realize, all the you shouldas............. Remember Have Fun!!!!

Thanks!

Bob, nice job on the caboose! Probably a bit bigger than what I'm looking to do.

As for the Star Trek shuttlepod... Never was a big fan of that design, Always felt that the Paramount prop and model department waited until the night before it was due to start their homework. Their (plywood) roots are showing. They did do a nice job on the runabouts and some of the other craft, however (IMHO).

However, going back to the railroad theme, it seems like the rooflines of these cars would lend themselves to a nice TTT project (shortened severely, of course):

Certainly would make an interesting exercise in shaping foam!

Well, off to deal with real life and plan/dream some more (when time allows).

Thanks again!

Welcome to the Forum.
Building is fun, but remember to work with materials you are familiar with!
For me it was metal, as I am no woodworker.
Enjoy your build!

Heh-

Forget anything like above! Started playing around with what things would look like if you shortened the length, adjusted the height, and so on.

It would look like a casket.

Welcome aboard Glenn. No one will look down their nose at you for building a trailer that "is a bit different". I know, I've done it 5 times so far. Build what ever suits you and you will enjoy it, I am sure. Good luck, ask any questions and take pictures.
