Planning a simple electrical system for my build.

Postby eddiegrey » Sat Apr 26, 2014 3:40 pm

Hello,

I am building my first TD and have a build thread here for those who are interested:
http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=5 ... p#p1075864

I am nearing the stage of planning for my electrical system. I purchased this roof vent/fan: http://www.etrailer.com/Enclosed-Traile ... SP-34.html

So I want to eventually add a battery to give me the ability to have things running in remote areas. But that will be down the road. I figure I can wire my 12V stuff up and this to run that stuff (Right now the fan and a couple of lights inside the camper) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012BL8LG/ref ... 5QTM22NB5U

And plug into the campground with this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009ANV81S/ref ... JNVRU3UWGJ

Using some of these: http://www.amazon.com/Roadpro-Fused-Rep ... auto_img_y to hook up the few things that are 12V like the fan and lights.

Is this a good setup? I will be able to update things as I go along it seems. I'm just very inexperienced with 12V systems and I want to run MOSTLY 110 stuff with the ability to get a battery and inverter down the road for remote camping.

Thanks in advance.

IF this was me I would not use those "cigarette" lighter plugs to connect the fan and lights. These plugs are meant for removable things. One of the issues many of these have is jiggling loose. Instead I would hard wire the fan and the lights. But that's me.

That fan may disappoint. There has been a discussion on that type. I have had one in a past RV and it simply made more noise than move air. There is no comparison to a Fantastic fan. But it is cheaper and some folks think they are okay.

Well it would be temporary until I get a battery setup. So my guess is that it will be ok for that application.

Also, I really wanted a fan-tastic vent but my funds dried up after someone stole my tires and hubs off of the trailer and I had to order a new axle hubs and tires....so I went with this cheaper option.

Here is what I did and it may work for your camper.

First, this is how mine is set up:

I have a shore power plug similar to the one you have but it is hard wired into two 20 amp circuit breakers. Then I have one circuit that is wired for a outlet for a refrigerator and one that is in the cabin for a tv/DVD player. Then I have a third is in the electronic cabinet for two of these "Pyramid PS9KX 5A/7A Power Supply with Cigarette Lighter Plug". One is a 3amp and one is a 7amp. The 3 amp runs the fan and the seven runs the lights and 12 volt outlets inside for charging phones/iPods/etc. When I use a battery when there is no shore power I just unhook the leads to the power supply's and hook them to the battery.

This is a suggestion for a simpler solution:

Use the shore power plug that you listed and plug in a fused surge protector with multiple outlets. You can hook up the power supply's to that for the 12 volt power. You will have both sources of power and the power supply will have a cigarette lighter for a phone charger. The fan can be hard wired in.

I hope this helps. If not, feel free to ask more questions, I can always be mor confusing.
