Well the turbine is done!!!

Postby pyro22487 » Sat Apr 26, 2014 11:50 pm

So as a few of you know I have been building a wind turbine. I finished it and it lit a small lightbulb. It is super inefficient right now. It only has 2 blades the chain is loose and the blades are not balanced. So it takes around 18mph winds to start it and 20 to get it really moving. But the main point is it produced power. Now all I need is a control box and battery and we are done with te power supply... For now

Anybody try a Brushless motor for one of these ... 3 wire so may need outboard circuitry to make it usable .... maybe ??? They are very Efficient ...

I used a 2500rpm 250 watt 24 volt scooter motor. Geared it so that I could get a higher voltage and wattage out of it.

I wanted an amtek motor but they are so pricy now it just wast feasible. I got two scooters that were fully functional exept they needed new batteries for 30$. The amtek motors were 60-90$ each.

I believe that treadmill motors are the usual set up for this application. I am not sure, but it may be because most are dc and easy to come by cheap.

Yep you are correct and the next one I build will probably be one of those. My scooter motor works it just needs to be optimized. Like 3 bladed and tighter chain.
