Tongue questions, (legal) lengthening

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

I have replaced the tongue on both of my teardrop trailers, and just carry the original ID plate in my tool box. I don't think any cop is sharp enough to give you a hard time about making the change. I will keep saying that as I am being carted off to jail. The next best thing would be to simply attach the plate to the new tongue, and plead innocence when the cop pulls you over, checks your licence, insurance info and (rarely) trailer ID plate............Good luck, and if caught, ingnore my stupid post.

A couple of days ago, thanks to this discussion reminding me, I took the plate and pop-rivited it on the trailer... I put silicone sealant on the back and clamped it in place, and did the deed. It came out very nice, and the sealant will keep it flat against the tongue.

Everything now is nice and legal. We are off to KY for a week and it's another thing I don't have to be concerned about..... I wouldn't want to be in a strange state with the plate in my glove compartment and try to explain that to some cop.... on the tongue is much better, imho.... Some cops won't buy into the "oh, here it is" story.....

Vin Munber

I had to get a new vin number for my boat trailer. They gave me the tag and said put it on the trailer, I took it to be inspected and he looked at it and that was it. That is here in Maryland. I would hope it is as easy for everybody.

Well, here's an update for IL. I went to DMV expecting to gather the proper info required for registering/titling/licensing. Then I could return at a later time with all the proper items/info.

However, it wasn't that complicated. Just gave the info, answered a couple of questions (motorcycle trailer, homebuilt, etc.), paid my $80+ bucks, and she handed me a registration, drawbar sticker, license plate, and license sticker. No inspection and no hassle. So, I just placed the new drawbar sticker on the new tongue and left the original tag off.
