[Kayak Mike]

Hi all been looking into tear drop trailers for the last year or so and finally got permission from the lady. I am an avid kayak fisherman who is to cheap to pay for hotels when I go on a trip. The fiance is not a fan of tents either. I am looking for something that can hold her and I along with all my fishing gear rods and such and it needs to be able to hold a couple kayaks also. I look forward to seeing what many of you have pieced together to get some solid ideas to run with.

Unfortunately I have prior obligations that I can not break. Taking an old timer out fishing for the opener this weekend. His kids and grandkids are to busy and he can not launch his boat by him self or tow it so I figured I was gonna be fishing anyways I could take him out on his boat. Plus he might give me a few new honey holes to hit. He has been fishing the lake for about 70 years or so...

We just finished "Cooler Near the Lake" viewtopic.php?f=1&t=57806 (check out the last several pages for pictures) and one of the trailers that we had at the event was made by TC Trailers of Wisconsin. This is a tear drop with a flat top that is perfect for attaching a rack. backroads4me and riowilson both have this trailer and you might want to ask them how they like it. TC Trailers does very little advertising as he gets enough business by just attending Canoeacopia in Madison each year. The web page is here:

Besides the flat top you will find his pricing more than attractive and he is a Wisconsin builder who will customize based on you needs.

CampInn is also a local builder of tears and is the Cadillac of trailers. Also considerably more expensive.

I did see the TC Teardrops at Canoecopia. I never miss the show. I will take and look at the Cooler by the Lake thread and see if there is anything I like. I think my main goal right know is looking to see how others have stored thier rods in the tear drop. I was thinking of making a false floor and with the use of rod sleeves storing my rods underneath. Will see as time goes on how I handle it.

Welcome to the board! Bob and I bought our 5 x 9 TCTeardrop last year, and just love it. Tracks behind the tow vehicle and pulls so easy I sometimes forget it's back there (lead foot ). If you check out this old TCTeardrops Flickr page, there's numerous photos of kayaks mounted on top of the tears-----perhaps you could mount some kind of container between the kayaks to hold your fishing rods.

Have you towed a kayak on your teardrop. My kayaks are a bit wider than the touring kayaks on your flickr page and I am worried about J saddles and the light weight of the trailer. Thanks for the picks though I really like the design of the tear drop behind the hummer.

Bob and I aren't into water sports, and haven't hauled anything on top of our TD. Todd and Carol of TCteardrops are really nice folks---they would be the best folks for info. on the kayak hauling as they've done it a lot themselves and could refer you to others who have also.

Welcome! I wouldn't hesitate to put Kayaks on the top of our TCTeardrop. I have a large Yakima storage box already, as well as a Foxwing. Plenty of storage up front for fishing tackle. Good luck!! -Mike W.

Thanks for the info. I see you are pretty close to me if your user name has anything to do with where you live. I am just a hop skip and a jump from you in Beaver Dam.

I have looked through quite a few builds and haven't seen any woodie tear drops that have been purposefully been made to look aged. Are you all aware of any?

When I travel out west for a little fly fishing I attache a home made carrier to the roof of my car. I have found one of the best carriers to be PVC pipe with a cap glued on one end and a screw off clean out cap on the other end. Cheap easy to make and nearly indestructible.

I am not aware of any...but I also haven't really been looking. And yes I am nearby!

Sounds great, that is the same reason I am building mine. It will have a rack for mine and wife's kayak. I'm sure it will get used else ware though. Good luck on your planning and build. It is a fun little project.
