"borrowed" ideas that worked.

Postby Shadow Catcher » Tue May 06, 2014 3:58 pm

One of the things I love about a gathering are seeing what others have come up with, and as I have said plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery. Borrowed ideas that worked.

You need to tell where you got the idea and details, and what if any modifications.

I needed poles for our rear tarp and if you have looked for adjustable tent poles you know they are usually steel and heavy and do not work all that well. At CAG four plus years ago I saw some nice red adjustable poles attached to a nice home made awning on a tear pulled by a red VW bug. When asked about them it turned out they were adjustable painter pole extensions with a bolt stuck in the end.
Extension poles are available in various lengths and materials and I drilled and threaded the end and screwed in SS bolts and cuts the heads off. Works really well. :D

Ideas that I have borrowed that have worked for me.
Cooler Cozy - made of aluminized bubble wrap insulation covered with a sewn fabric cover, makes a cheap 2 day cooler into a cheap 3 day cooler
Vestibule frame made from electrical conduit using conduit fittings to hold it all together
Tarp tent - suggested by Rob Brooks at last year's DAM Gathering, worked really well on last June's Tour of the Great Northwet

Portable shower, take a 3 gallon garden sprayer attach a sink sprayer on the hose. 2 gallons of water, add 1 gallon boiled water, shake and you've got hot showers for 2. Got the idea at the IRG from a guy named Tom from NY. It can also be used for dishes.

I have “borrowed” more than a few ideas from 48Rob. The most recent was his awning poles made out of closet rods and copper plumbing fittings.
Thanks Rob, Bob.

Here's a picture of the one that he made:

We 'borrowed' several of NevadaTear Debbie and Randy's ideas including their water jug drawer idea; it works great! Thank you both!

Here is a door stop designed for large, carriage-style garage doors:

I miniaturized it for the door in my camper:

It's called a common courtesy. A way of saying thanks to the individual that thought it up and shared it with you. They could have just as easily said no and didn't say a word about it. Maybe this is the kind of stuff that caused that woman to dump you.

At the very first LCG (louisiana Cypresswood Gathering) at Lake Bistineau SP, LA in Oct 2006 our 'next site' neighbors were Terry & Connie (Nubwon) from Lake Charles (I think), LA. Terry had the neatest little 'hinged' folding table attached to his galley. It was very sturdy, folded up neatly while traveling, but was easily folded out & set-up when in camp. I asked if he'd mind if I copied it ^ he said 'help yourself'' so I took a few close-up pix & when we got home I found some extra 'scrap' 3/4" birch ply & went to work. The little table has drawn compliments every place we've been & is probably the handiest thing I've added to our TD. It is always in use when we're in camp & has held up well through more'n 7yrs & 20K+ miles...

Whoa, slow down there cowboy. Not going to air your dirty laundry? If your not going to give us all the dirty details thats ok with me, but then maybe you shouldn't be fishing for sympathy about love gone wrong in the 3 to 4 threads you start everyday.
Jeez, I know more about your personal life from this forum then I want to .
I'm sorry life sucks for you, but enough of the pity party, it's a party for one.

That is so classy! I'm still at the design stage and was going round in circles with whether I could squeeze in a water tank, should I add a pump, could it be gravity fed? And in fact this elegant idea is - like all great ideas - wonderfully simple.
Thanks for posting.... That's definitely going in my ideas folder.

I've never made any secret that I got the Cooler Cozy idea from Debbie (Nevada Tear), and the conduit-framed vestibule from Gordon and Michelle Burwell, who don't post here.

I've gotten tons of great ideas here, and lots of great advice, with special attention to 48Rob, Bruce Osborne, and Bob Henry for lots of great help and advice. :applause:

Charlie, I know where you got it, wink, wink. And you are right, you have always given me more credit than I deserve! I got the idea spark from a burning man thread somewhere on keeping stuff cold and a quilter just has to quilt. I think we all benefit from each other here. Doug has passed on many an idea, including covering the hinge in my doors with thin rip stop to keep the dust out. Thanks Doug! It is indeed great to pick up ideas here. It is also nice to give credit when someone has something that has helped you. It makes you feel good when you know you have inspired someone. Makes it worthwhile to keep coming back here after the build is done. And mallymal, I LOVE MY SLIDING WATER BOTTLE. IT IS ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE things we did. I highly recommend it.
