Running boards on a Tear

Postby RandyG » Wed May 14, 2014 9:40 am

I haven't seen any running boards on a teardrop, and I'm considering putting them on mine. Of coarse the door will need some special concerns so the board doesn't make getting in and out any harder. Any thoughts?

We had some on the back of our first TD.... did make it easier to clean the roof , and another place to put stuff , or have a seat ... Mine were steel , welded to the trailer frame as you can see in the pic. 8198
There’s no place like Foam !

Here is a TD with them on that I really like. The entire build is at the link if you're interested.

GPW, I like how your's sloped off before the door, my door may be too close for that. But I will definitely try something out as a mock up. Looks like I can go about 6-8" out from the wall, just from how I sit in the door but I'm not the only one getting in there. I'm also not sure how to blend it into my curved front. Left over foam will be the first test pieces.

They'd be a good addition I think. While you're at it, make
them with periodic gaps/holes so that you can be able to tie
things to it. A lot of South African OffRoad campers/caravans
usually have at least a pipe-like front and side perimeter
"bumper" that is meant to help direct errant branches away
from the trailer but also acts as a stepping place and a rail
to tie things to.

It'd also be a good idea to add 2-3 receivers on
each side [see oasis maker's thread on it] as well, as they'd
be extremely handy to attach anything from stabilizing jacks,
to tables, to awnings etc.. It wouldn't be that much added
work or expense but would deliver a lot of versatility.

Maybe mounting the running board/bumper assembly to the
underneath of the chassis main rails with cross pieces to support
it would be a way to add it without interfering with your doors ?

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Micro-Lite trailers have them http://www.microlitetrailer.com/MLThome2.htm along with an incorporated box. The box aft of the wheel well makes sense but I don't really see a reason for running boards. Compass Rose has door sill that is very low so that sitting on the edge of the bed to put shoes on is comfortable. Having anything there would make it more difficult.

I didn't think about mounting things to them Mezmo, great idea! Fuel, water and maybe propane tanks would fit on there easy. Thanks for all the input everyone!

I was going to put some one infront of the side Saddles but my wife talked me out of it.

She aid when we want to clean it out or make the bed it will just get in the way.

She is shorter and I thought it could replace the step stool she uses, you know one of those collapsable ones you see at RV stores.

Stop IT. Your making my brain go crazy. What a great idea. I was going to add skirts before I side in Al and running boards would be perfect. Now all I have to do is pre-plan so when I add the skirts I can say," OH YEAH, I planned that". My TD doesn't need running boards to get in but would be very aesthetically pleasing. I welded the inside skirt of my fenders, all the way around, before bolting them on and they are very strong. i can stand or sit on with no flex. I can see the running boards now. Thanks.
